So richtig freue ich mich eigentlich auch auf nichts, aber finde es natürlich trotzdem schön, dass es mit HALLOWEEN ENDS und FIRESTARTER gleich zwei neue Carpenter-Scores geben wird. Daneben natürlich noch der Elfman, der wegen Raimi mal wieder ein besserer, großer Score von ihm werden könnte. Und ja, auch bei TOP GUN MAVERICK bin ich gespannt, was Hans aus Faltermeyers Musik gemacht hat. Wenngleich wahrscheinlich außer dem Thema nichts von Faltermeyer zu hören sein wird und der Rest eher ein typischer Hans werden könnte. -
Wie nun bestätigt wurde, wird Carpenter mit seinem Sohn und Daniel Davis die Musik für das Remake von FIRESTARTER schreiben. Damit schreibt Carpenter zum ersten Mal die Musik für einen Film, an dem er weder als Regisseur, Autor oder Produzent beteiligt war. Und es schließt sich auch der Kreis, da Carpenter damals eigentlich für die Regie der ersten Verfilmung vorgesehen war. Doch der finanzielle Flop und die schlechte Resonanz von Kritikern und Publikum bei THE THING kostete ihn das eine oder andere Projekt. Darunter auch FIRESTARTER. Die Musik zum Original stammt von Tangerine Dream.

Die digitalen Rechte liegen aber normalerweise beim Studio und die geben sie wohl auch nur in Ausnahmefällen an Dritte ab. Deswegen gibt es ja so viele Sachen der kleinen Label „nur" als physischen Datenträger, da die digitalen Rechte eine komplett neue Lizenz verlangen würden und die behalten die Studios eben meist für sich selbst. Und wenn das Studio an keiner digitalen Veröffentlichung interessiert ist, dann gibt es das entsprechende Album eben auch nicht als Download oder zum Streamen. Im Falle von THE ORVILLE kann man aber wohl optimistisch sein, da es auch die anderen beiden Alben zumindest zum Streamen gibt. -
Snow Files of the Week: "Pool of Freedom/Freedom (Joe's Waltz)" aus "Crazy In Alabama" (1999). Der Film ist das Regie-Debüt von Antonio Banderas, mit seiner damaligen Frau Melanie Griffith in der Hauptrolle. Es ist ebenfalls eine seltene Gelegenheit für Mark, die Musik für einen Kinofilm zu schreiben. Die Musik ist Mark Snow durch und durch, mit schönen Themen und einem allgemein mystischen Feeling. Das Soundtrack-Album gibt es noch zu vernünftigen Preisen. Viel Spaß beim Hören!

Scheinbar. Der Titel ist seit einigen Tagen bestellbar bei Perseverance, die ja dazu schreiben, dass nur die ersten 60 Stück über sie, der Rest über ihren Vertrieb MVD läuft. Ob sich das nur darin äussert, dass der Titel dann nicht mehr von ihnen, sondern von MVD verschickt wird, weiß ich nicht. Aber bestellen kann man die CD noch über ihren Shop, was dann ja bedeuten könnte, dass nach der Zeit die 60 Stück noch nicht erreicht sind. Gut, den Titel wird sich sicherlich nur ein harter Kern zulegen (ich hab selbst vom Film noch nie was gehört), da werden 300 Stück wohl schon ausreichend sein.

Snow Files of the Week: „The Seeds Of Mistrust", aus „The X-Files", Episode „Kitten" (2018). In dieser Folge aus der elften Staffel erfahren wir etwas mehr über Assistant Director Skinner. Während des Vietnam-Krieges diente Skinner bei den Marines. Zusammen mit seinem Kameraden John „Kitten" James soll er eine Kiste mit der Aufschrift MK-NAOMI eskortieren. Sie werden angegriffen und beide müssen sich in einer Hütte mit anderen Zivilisten verstecken. Während Skinner einem verwundeten Soldaten hilft, wird die Kiste von Kugeln getroffen und ein grünes Gas tritt aus, welchem John ausgesetzt wird. Als Skinner in die Hütte zurück kommt, sieht er, dass „Kitten" alle Zivilisten ermordet hat. In der Gegenwart werden Mulder und Scully auf die Spur Skinners gesetzt, der spurlos verschwunden ist. Etwas aus der Vergangenheit ist wieder aufgetaucht. In diesem Stück zeigt sich Mark wieder von seiner melancholischen Seite. Ein geisterhafter Chor singt über die sanften Streicher und Piano-Motive, das X-Files-Thema taucht kurz auf, bevor das Stück mit einer wehmütigen Solo-Trompete endet. Die Tracks stammen vom 2CD-Set von LLL, welches auf 3.000 Stück limitiert ist. Viel Spaß beim Hören!

HALLOWEEN KILLS, John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter und Daniel Davies Das Beste am Film. Wenngleich auch nicht ganz so stark wie der Vorgänger-Score zu HALLOWEEN (2018). -
Snow Files of the Week: „Mr Deep Throat/Detective Schmuck" aus „The X-Files", Episoden „Deep Throat" und „The Jersery Devil" (1993). Mulders Informant aus den frühen Staffel der Serie, der Mann mit der tiefen Stimme, der deshalb nur „Deep Throat" genannt wurde, war tatsächlich eine der wichtigsten Nebenfiguren der frühen Jahre. Das erkennt man auch daran, dass Mark Snow ihm ein eigenes Motiv schrieb. Ein geheimnisvolles, flirrendes Motiv, welches die schwer einzuschätzenden Motive von „Deep Throat" noch nebulöser erscheinen lässt. Die Folge „The Jersey Devil" ist sozusagen Chris Carters eigene Bigfoot-Geschichte. Verstümmelte Leichen tauchen in New Jersey auf und alle Bissspuren deuten auf einen Menschen hin. Mulder stößt bei seinen Ermittlungen auf die Legende vom „Teufel von Jersey". Beide Tracks stammen vom vierten X-Files-Set von LLL, welches auf 2.000 Stück limitiert ist. Viel Spaß beim Hören!

Noch mal kaufen. Wobei die Chance groß ist, dass auch Teil 3 und 4 später doch noch einzeln veröffentlicht werden. Zumindest ist das auch so bei Vareses Horror-Box und der Stephen-King-Box gewesen. DREAMCATCHER, THE STAND oder auch THE SERPENT AND THE RAINBOW kamen später auch einzeln. Hartnäckig sind sie bisher nur bei ihrer NIGHTMARE-Box. Aus der wurde bisher nichts einzeln veröffentlicht, im Gegensatz zu LLLs FRIDAY-Box.

Snow Files of the Week: "The Surgeon/Alpine Page/Dude Looks Like A Lady" aus "MillenniuM", Episode "Lamentation" (1996). Diese Folge, geschrieben von Chris Carter selbst, markiert einen Meilenstein innerhalb des "story arcs" von "MillenniuM". Nicht nur sehen wir in der Episode den Tod einer der Nebenfiguren, sondern auch die dämonische Lucy Butler, gespielt von Sarah Jane Redmond, hat hier ihren ersten Auftritt. Sie suchte Frank Black daraufhin auch in den weiteren zwei Staffeln heim. Ausserdem hat der sogenannte "Gehenna Dämon" hier seinen größten Auftritt. Musikalisch hat die Folge auch einiges zu bieten. Mark schrieb ein kurzes Motiv für den psychotischen Dr. Fabricant, welches aber im Verlauf der Folge eher zum Motiv für Lucy Butler wird ("The Surgeon"). Und Mark packte klassische Musik in seinen Score. In "Alpine Page" hören wir ein Stück aus Tschaikowskys "1812 Overture", welches später auch in der X-Files-Episode "Post-Modern Prometheus" auftauchte. Die Tracks stammen vom zweiten Set mit "MillenniuM"-Musik von LLL. Das Set war auf 2.000 Stück limitiert und ist mittlerweile ausverkauft. Viel Spaß beim Hören!

Snow Files of the Week: "The Smell of Zombies/The End of the Crusade" aus der X-Files-Folge "Millennium" (1999). Chris Carters zweite Serie "MillenniuM" endete vor dem Jahr 2000 (das Finale der Serie spielt im Mai 1999 und endet eigentlich mit einem Cliffhanger). Also suchten Carter und sein Team nach einer Möglichkeit, die Geschichte um Frank Black und der MillenniuM-Gruppe abzuschliessen. So kam es zu einer Crossover-Folge in der siebten Staffel der X-Akten. Trotz großer Enttäuschung vieler Fans über das Crossover (nach drei Staffeln "MillenniuM" mit seinem ganzen "story arc" endet es mit Mulder und Frank Black, die in einem Keller Zombies erschiessen), bleibt der herausragende Score von Mark Snow. Es gab ihm die Möglichkeit, die klagende Violine aus "MillenniuM" mit den Klanglandschaften der X-Files zu kombinieren. Und als Mulder und Scully sich endlich küssen, während sie im Fernsehen die Feierlichkeiten zum neuen Jahr 2000 verfolgen, baut Snow das traditionelle "Auld Lang Syne" in seine Musik ein, die mit einem raren Aufblitzen des X-Files-Themas endet. Die Musik wurde auf dem ersten 4-CD-Box-Set von LLL veröffentlicht, welches auf 2000 Exemplare limitiert ist. Frohes neues Jahr!

Dragon's Domain/BSX zum Jahresende. Dragon’s Domain Records, to be distributed through buysoundtrax.com, presents the original motion picture soundtrack to NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 2, composed by David Spear for the 1987 action film directed by the legendary Corey Yuen (FONG SAI YUK 1 & 2, THE TRANSPORTER) and starring Loren Avedon, Max Thayer, Matthias Hues and Cynthia Rothrock. Released in 1987 following the unexpected success of NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER the year before, which happened to include the theatrical debut of Belgian screen actor, martial artist, and fight choreographer Jean-Claude Van Damme and also directed by Corey Yuen, NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 2 was intended to be a direct sequel to the first film but actually began life as a different film called RAGING THUNDER. When the original film’s stars chose not to return, the story and characters were altered to form a completely new narrative. Even though no elements of the story remained to connect it to the original film, the title was changed to NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 2, or NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 2: RAGING THUNDER. The film was also released in parts of the world as KARATE TIGER 2. The story begins in Vietnam, where American college student Scott Wylde (Avedon) arrives looking for his former teacher and best friend Mac (Thayer). A former lover of Jarvis’ named Terry (Rothrock) tells Scott that Mac is likely in Patpong, a seedy area of Bangkok, Thailand. After dinner with his fiancé Sulin, a gang of tough types crash into Scott’s room kidnapping Sulin. Scott is detained by local authorities and sent to the airport to board a plane for Singapore. He escapes and heads to Patpong, where he locates and recruits Jarvis to help him invade Cambodia to rescue his fiancé. Scott learns that Sulin’s father was a famous Vietnamese general who, for the sake of his family, reneged on a lucrative deal with the Soviet militia. The next day Scott and Jarvis are ambushed by Thai police; however, Terry swoops in and rescues the pair in a helicopter. Scott, Mac, and Terry arrive in Cambodia threatening all out war in hopes of rescuing poor Sulin. The music for NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 2 was composed by David Spear, a prolific composer, conductor and orchestrator. Spear composed the bulk of his music for NO RETREAT, NO SURRENDER 2 using piano/keyboards, bass, guitar, drums, and an EVI—an electronic valve instrument using the Boehm fingering system utilized by most woodwind instruments. Spear and multiple reels of tapes were flown up to Vancouver along with all of the hand-written orchestrations and hand-copied parts for the final orchestra sessions. David Spear began his career orchestrating many film scores for Elmer Bernstein including AIRPLANE, ANIMAL HOUSE, HEAVY METAL and GHOSTBUSTERS. After his Broadway debut as Music Director of MERLIN, THE MAGICAL MUSICAL, Spear wrote scores for three Academy Award nominated films: RAINBOW WAR, BALLET ROBOTIQUE, and THE COURAGE TO CARE. He composed the music for the Emmy Award winning National Geographic documentary, SURVIVING EVEREST. One of his first major scores was for the 1981 vampire thriller FEAR NO EVIL, composed in collaboration with the film’s writer/director Frank LaLoggia. Rob Hanisey, an unsuccessful writer, rents a room in the Highberger House to write a novel and discovers there are fates worse than literary anonymity when he encounters Valerie,a mysterious woman and a stalking demon spawned from the imagination of three of the tenants. Also from the second season, ‘The Washingtonians’, from a short story by Bentley Little and directed by Peter Medak (THE CHANGELING). In this episode, Mike Franks finds his family in danger after he discovers a strange letter hidden behind a portrait of George Washington which contains a shocking secret about the United States of America's founding fathers, in which a secret society is hell-bent on keeping quiet at any cost. Richard Band was born in Los Angeles on December 28, 1953. He is the son of film producer-director-writer Albert Band (THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE – screen adaptation), brother to producer-distributor Charles Band and uncle to young rock star Alex Band of the rock group ‘The Calling’. Shortly after his brother Charles had formed his first movie company, Richard decided to take a break from music and began to work as an assistant director on some of his films. He then went from assistant director to production manager, to associate producer and finally producer on over 13 films. Richard has since gone on to score over 75 feature films and many television productions including multiple episodes of STARGATE SG-1, WALKER: TEXAS RANGER and Disney's SING ME A STORY series. Richard has composed the music for more than 10 interactive computer/video games over the years and has had many soundtracks that have been released of his film works. Richard has also scored many documentaries including the award-winning series’ MOST DECORATED, BRUTE FORCE and WEAPONS OF WAR and has also contributed much music to other series’ like THE REAL WEST, CIVIL WAR JOURNALS and BIOGRAPHIES. During the middle of this period, Safan began exploring scoring movies by combining orchestras with electronics. Released in 1987, TIMESTALKERS tells the story of a twentieth-century college professor (William Devane) who is sought out by a woman of the twenty-sixth century (Lauren Hutton) to help her locate a power-crazed scientist (Klaus Kinski) who has left the future to change a significant event in the past in order to alter the events of their future. The manhunt stretches from the year 2586 back to 1886. Directed by Michael Schultz and scripted by Brian Clemens, Safan provided an electronic score using a variety of 1980’s vintage synthesizers, including Synclavier, Yamaha DX7, and Roland Juno-106. From 1980, DIE LAUGHING tells the story of Pinsky,a San Francisco cab driver (Robbie Benson) and an aspiring singer (Linda Grovenor) who become tangled up in a plot to kidnap a monkey that has memorized a scientific formula with the potential to destroy the world. The formula shows how to turn atomic waste into plutonium. Pinsky finds himself framed for murder and chased all over town by the people who are trying to get their hands on the formula. With DIE LAUGHING, Safan provided a thoroughly orchestral score, recorded with an ensemble of 50 musicians at Evergreen Studios in Los Angeles. Emmy-nominated and eight-time ASCAP award-winning composer Craig Safan has scored more than one hundred feature films, television and documentaries, has had more than 50 soundtrack albums of his music produced, as well as having three original albums of his own impressionistic music released. This first collection of David Michael Frank’s film music exhibits three scores from the mid 80’s and mid ‘90s, showing three very distinctly different styles and demonstrating different flavors of the composer’s expertise. Released in 1985, CODE OF SILENCE was the first action film scored by David Michael Frank, and is also recognized as one of action star Chuck Norris’ best films. This was the fourth film for director Andrew Davis and Frank would collaborate with him again on his next film, ABOVE THE LAW, which launched action star Steven Seagal’s career and also increased the demand for the composer’s talents for scoring action films. Norris plays Eddie Cusack, a Chicago cop who gets caught in the middle of a gang war while his own comrades shun him because he wants to take down a corrupt fellow officer. Henry Silva has a memorable role as the film’s villain and would also return to play the villain in ABOVE THE LAW. Frank’s score for CODE OF SILENCE is a mix of sequencer material the director was fond of but most of the score is in the style of hip fusion, mid ‘80s style, with a rhythm section featuring some of Hollywood’s hottest musicians (George Doering on electric guitar, Neil Stubenhaus on bass, Vinnie Colaiuta on drums, and on keyboards Mike Lang, Randy Kerber, and Mike Boddicker. Released in 1996, COSMIC VOYAGE was a short documentary film produced in the IMAX format, directed by Bayley Silleck and narrated by Morgan Freeman. The film, presented by the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum, sought to explore our place among the ever-expanding universe. The score was recorded at Skywalker Ranch with a 90-piece orchestra. Also included, from 1994, music not from a film but a corporate event, from the BOEING 777 ROLLOUT. When the first of a new series of airliner is built, Boeing puts on a PR show, and in 1994, the 777 was their newest airplane. The rollout was a 10-minute event to present the new plans to the public, and Boeing wanted to make it the most spectacular one to date. Frank was hired to compose a ten-minute fanfare and suite for the rollout, which was a one-day presentation with 105,000 people gathered into Boeing’s large aircraft hangar. David Michael Frank was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland where he studied classical piano and composition at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. After graduating from Northwestern University, Frank moved to New York, where he became Broadway’s youngest conductor. After six years in New York, he relocated to California to pursue a career in film composition, where he’s scored numerous films of various types and over 200 episodes of television over more than forty years in media composition. Cirino, an expert electronic musician and composer, had recently added an Roland D50 synthesizer to his array of electronic equipment, and used it for the first time on this score. Released in 1995, WITCH ACADEMY, also known as LITTLE DEVILS, tells the story of Leslie Perkins, who is trying to pledge to an exclusive college sorority while the other members come up with twisted new ways to humiliate her and keep her out. However, the Devil has other plans for Leslie and helps transform her into one of his emissaries of temptation. But why has the Devil taken an interest in her? WITCH ACADEMY was the eleventh film Cirino had scored for Fred Olen Ray as director. Chuck Cirino did not start his career as a composer, but rather as a programmer in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania for a Public Access cable TV station, where he learned how to create TV shows by himself, without a crew. In his spare time, he experimented with the station’s video equipment and created a series of genre productions that allowed him the opportunity to learn how to incorporate special effects into his work. After relocating to California, Cirino transitioned into directing high-end special effects television commercials. His first work as composer was for the 1980 cult film GYPSY ANGELS, which starred Vanna White and Richard Roundtree. Since then he has scored films for Roger Corman, directed music videos for bands like Earth, Wind & Fire and The Dickies’ KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, and has recorded over 40 music soundtracks for feature films including SORCERESS, HARD TO DIE, TRANSYLVANIA TWIST, and many others. Most recently, he has scored A DOGGONE CHRISTMAS, A DOGGONE HOLLYWOOD and A DOGGONE ADVENTURE. Chuck has worked as a producer, director, filmmaker, videographer, animator, special effects technician, editor, and composer. Chris Bacon hat ja auch bei den „großen" Elfman-Scores der letzten Jahre als „additional composer" fungiert. Beziehungsweise große Teile davon selber geschrieben. Das hier klingt auch eher so, als würde Elfman quasi Themen und Ideen liefern und Bacon den eigentlichen Score schreiben. Die Zeit oder die Lust für eine Serie hat Elfman wohl eher nicht.
