  8. Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere limited edition soundtrack: THE COUNTERFEIT TRAITOR Music Composed and Conducted by Alfred Newman In one of the greatest years for motion pictures and their scores, one of the most forgotten and best films of 1962 was Perlberg-Seatons production of the Paramount Picture The Counterfeit Traitor. The film was a sobering, gripping, exciting, touching espionage thriller and at the top of its class, as espionage thrillers go. Starring William Holden and Lilli Palmer, along with a host of wonderful overseas character actors (including Academy Award-winner Hugh Griffith), and some great location photography, The Counterfeit Traitor was written and directed by George Seaton (from the novel by Alexander Klein based on a true story). Recounting the story of Eric Erickson (Holden), an American-born citizen living in neutral Sweden during World War II, who is neutral enough to be profiting from working with both the Germans and the Allies. He is blackmailed into working for the Allies as a spy this he reluctantly agrees to because the Allies (represented by the caustic Griffith) have him in a bind. The film is filled with powerful and memorable sequences and great performances, especially by Holden and Palmer. But the film simply got lost in that years incredible shuffle, as did many other great films only later would some of them be rediscovered and achieve classic status and The Counterfeit Traitor is indeed a classic. The Paramount production values were top-notch in every department, most especially in the costumes of Edith Head and the photography of Jean Bourgoin. And, of course, it didnt hurt that The Counterfeit Traitor was blessed with a brilliant score by one of the greatest film composers who ever lived Alfred Newman. Newman, born in 1901, had spent most of his film music career at Twentieth-Century Fox, where he wrote many amazing scores, including such classics as The Mark of Zorro, The Keys of the Kingdom, The Song of Bernadette, Leave Her To Heaven, Captain from Castile, All About Eve, The Robe, A Man Called Peter, The Diary of Anne Frank and hundreds of others. He only wrote two scores in 1962, but they were both masterpieces and very different How The West Was Won and The Counterfeit Traitor. The score for The Counterfeit Traitor is classic Newman all the way, with its propulsive main title, his various suspense and dramatic cues, and one of his most memorable love themes ever the theme for Marianna. That gorgeous theme weaves itself in and out of many cues in the score. It first presents itself as background music, then becomes more prominent in each successive cue in which it occurs. For those whove never seen the film, Newmans score will be a revelation one of the great scores of the 1960s and of Newmans career. It is a treat to finally bring Newmans great score to CD for the first time. This CD was mastered from the original three-track Paramount master tapes housed in the Paramount vaults. While ninety-eight percent of the cues were in excellent condition, two short cues had very minor damage to them, but we felt that it was historically important to include them, even with that minor damage, which only amounts to less than 1:30 of the CDs playing time of just over sixty minutes. This release is limited to 1500 copies only. The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping. Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release. CD will ship the last week of April however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (weve been averaging four weeks early). 10. 15. This Film Score Monthly release premieres two Silver Age scores for films which take very different approaches to their respective stories. Telefon is a taut cold war thriller which plays out on an international stage; Hide in Plain Sight is a moving personal drama which focuses on family. To some extent, these differences are reflected in the music for each film. Telefon (1977) features Charles Bronson as a KGB agent charged with heading off an international crisis by finding and killing a rogue Stalinist who is activating sleeper agents planted in the United States during the 1950s. Lee Remick co-stars as his helpmate (actually a double agent). The brooding and atmospheric score by Lalo Schifrin contributes greatly to the films tension. Apart from a deceptively peaceful folk-like melody for the rogue Russian agent and a would-be love theme (not developed until the end credits), the score is essentially devoid of expansive melodies. Schifrins music relies instead on carefully inflicted motives (à la Bernard Herrmann) and a vaguely Russian harmonic and melodic basisreinforced by prominent use of a cimbalom in the orchestrationto provide atmosphere and a sense of menace where appropriate. The original multi-track recordings of Telefon do not survive, but FSM has created a convincing stereo image from a ½" three-track monaural mix preserved by the studio. Hide in Plain Sight (1980) is based on the true story of a New Jersey factory worker whose children are whisked away by the Federal Witness Protection program when his ex-wifes mobster husband turns states evidence against his former associates. James Caanwho also directed the filmplays Thomas Hacklin, a man who takes on powerful governmental forces in an attempt to find and re-unite with his kids. Leonard Rosenman composed a relatively brief score for the film, of which Caan ultimately used only four cues (two of which are source music), retaining Rosenmans soaring, lyrical theme for Hacklins relationship with his children (including the touching finale), while eliminating the more dramatic, suspense oriented material. This FSM CD reveals for the first time the much broader range of Rosenmans effort since it includes all the music the composer recorded for the picture, newly remixed from ½ three-track stereo masters. The accompanying 20-page booklet includes essays on both titles by film historian Scott Bettencourt, FSMs customary track-by-track analyses, film stills and promotional materials. Longer, more detailed versions of Bettencourt's essays will soon be available here, along with FSM's other free online notes. 18. Greetings! Kritzerland is proud to present a new world premiere limited edition soundtrack: ORDEAL BY INNOCENCE - The Lost Score Music Composed by Pino Donaggio THE CURIOUS CASE OF THE MISSING SCORE In the 1970s and 1980s, there were several big-screen all-star adaptations of Agatha Christie's books, starting with the huge success of Murder On The Orient Express, followed by Death On The Nile, The Mirror Crack'd, and Evil Under The Sun. 1985s Ordeal By Innocence was at the tail end of that particular cycle and was based on Christie's 1958 book, one of her darker tales - it was also one of her favorites of that period. The film version, made by Cannon, assembled a top-notch cast including Donald Sutherland, Faye Dunaway, Christopher Plummer, Sarah Miles, Ian McShane, and Diana Quick. In the director's chair was Desmond Davis, who'd made the quirky 1960s films, Girl With Green Eyes and Smashing Time, as well as the 1981 version of Clash Of The Titans. Engaged to write the score was the wonderful Italian composer, Pino Donaggio, who by that time had made a huge name for himself turning out superior scores for such films as Don't Look Now, Carrie, Dressed To Kill, The Fan, Blow Out, Body Double, and many others. Donaggio provided his usual lush, beautiful, suspenseful music, the kind he was so adept at, and his score was fantastic. All should have been well in Christieland, but after Donaggio turned in his score, the film went through major revisions, with a lot of re-editing and some new footage. At that point, the film required rescoring, but Donaggio was already working on another project and was not available. To replace the score, they turned not to a well-known film composer or even a not-well-known film composer - they turned to jazz legend Dave Brubeck. Using existing Brubeck music, newly recorded for the film. Brubeck's music is terrific on its own - classic Brubeck all the way. Unfortunately, it isn't movie music and it's mostly at odds with the visuals and mood of the film. One can take the position that the film might have had a different fate with the Donaggio score. Or not. It's really hard to know. What we do know is that the score is top-of-the-line Donaggio. At times reminiscent of his work for De Palma (especially Dressed To Kill), it's all swirling strings and lush melodies and tension-filled passages, all very symphonic. No one did or does this sort of thing better than Donaggio. There was a short seventeen-minute suite used on a Pino Donaggio compilation, but this is the world premiere release of the entire score - every note written for the film, along with a suite of alternate cues. For anyone who loves Donaggio or who loves classic film scoring, this CD will, I hope, be very pleasing. This CD was assembled and mastered from the first generation two-track mixed music masters direct from Italy and the sound is phenomenal.
