  2. THERE IS NO 311 AREA CODE Kritzerland is proud to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack release: Dead Of Winter Music Composed by Richard Einhorn Just before the thriller genre made a huge comeback in September of 1987 with the release of Fatal Attraction, earlier that year Orion released a nifty, old-fashioned thriller called Dead Of Winter, directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, Mickey One, Night Moves, Little Big Man), starring Mary Steenburgen, Roddy McDowell, and Jan Rubes. The film was actually an unofficial remake of Joseph Lewis 1945 film, My Name Is Julia Ross. Here, in homage, one of the characters is named Julie Rose, and another is called Joseph Lewis. Penn had a good deal of fun with the thriller conventions, with Hitchcockian touches, a big, foreboding house, a severed finger, evil machinations under the guise of something innocent, blackmail, deceit, and an innocent heroine thrust into those evil doings. The reviews were mixed, but respectful the New York Times critic Janet Maslin wrote, When a director approaches Gothic horror with this much enthusiasm, the results are bound to be as merry as they are frightening. So audiences for Arthur Penns Dead of Winter are in for a hair-raising treat. And Roger Ebert wrote, The movie itself is finally just an exercise in silliness great effort to little avail but the actors have fun with it, the sets work and there are one or two moments with perfect surprises. For the films score, Penn hired Richard Einhorn, a composer who straddled the worlds of classical and film music. His opera with silent film, Voices of Light, was hailed as a great masterpiece of contemporary music and has had over 150 performances. Its CD (on Sony) was a Billboard classical bestseller. Prior to Dead Of Winter, he scored several films, including Dont Go In The House, Eyes Of A Stranger, and The Prowler, among others, and subsequent to Dead Of Winter he scored Bill Condons cult film, Sister, Sister. As it turned out, Einhorn was the ideal choice for Penns film the then-current vogue for thrillers, chillers, and horror back in the 1980s was an emphasis synthesizers. Einhorn took the opposite approach, with wonderful, atmospheric scoring for a real orchestra consisting of piano, harp, reeds, strings, and percussion. His score is eerie, beautiful, suspenseful, and perfectly evokes the snowy New England setting. Dead of Winter is mastered from Richard Einhorns personal digital tapes, which were in perfect condition. We present the entire score in film order, followed by a short suite of alternate cues. With Dead Of Winter, Richard Einhorn wrote one of the best thriller scores of the 1980s, and its a pleasure to finally bring it to CD. This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping. CD will ship the first week of December however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (weve been averaging four weeks early). 11. OUT OF THE SKY COMES THE SCREENS MOST INCREDIBLESPECTACLE OF MEN AND WAR Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack release: A Bridge Too Far Music Composed and Conducted by John Addison A Bridge Too Far, Richard Attenboroughs 1977 epic 22 million dollar film adapted from the 1974 book by Cornelius Ryan, tells the story of Operation Market Garden, the failed Allied attempt to break through German lines and take several bridges at a time when the Germans were on the retreat. With a literate script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, All The Presidents Men, Marathon Man, The Princess Bride, Magic), camerawork by Geoffrey Unsworth, and an amazing cast of stars, including Dirk Bogarde, James Caan, Laurence Olivier, Ryan ONeal, Robert Redford, Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Edward Fox, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, Hardy Kruger, Maximilian Schell, and Liv Ullman, A Bridge Too Far was and is a compelling and exciting film that holds up beautifully after all these years. For such a huge and impressive production, A Bridge Too Far received no Academy Award nominations whatsoever (it was the year of Annie Hall), but did receive several BAFTA nominations including Best Film and Best Director it took home several wins co-star Edward Fox, cameraman Geoffrey Unsworth, Best Sound, and one for the films musical score by John Addison. By the time of A Bridge Too Far, John Addison had written several classic film scores (Tom Jones, The Loved One, Sleuth, Torn Curtain, The Charge of the Light Brigade, Start the Revolution Without Me, The Seven-Percent Solution), and had been nominated twice for Academy Awards, winning for Tom Jones. When Addison found out that Richard Attenborough was going to make A Bridge Too Far, he called Attenborough and said he desperately wanted to do the music for the film, as he had a very personal connection to it as a young soldier hed served with the XXX Corps, the tank division that was at the heart of Operation Market Garden. And Addison delivered the goods, composing one of his greatest scores, with a rousing, tuneful march at its center, stirring action music, and some stunning dramatic cues. Richard Attenborough said this about Addison and his score: I shall never forget the occasion when, at Joe Levines invitation, he saw the actual film. At the end he was obviously greatly moved. One works because one must, he said, but sometimes the work is what you want with all your being and this, for me, is one of those occasions. If I cant write something wonderful for this film, then I should give up. When Joe Levine and I sat in the small music room of Johns Los Angeles home and listened to him playing the score on his piano for the first time, we were both on the verge of tears. He had, indeed, written some truly wonderful music. A Bridge Too Far was originally released on a United Artists LP. In 1999, Ryko issued it on CD, which subsequently went out of print it has been out of print for years now and is a much-requested title, which is why we decided to reissue it. The original LP masters were used for the CD, and its been completely remastered it for this CD release. This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping. CD will ship by the third week of November however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (weve been averaging four weeks early). 15. Greetings! Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack release - two great scores on one great CD: The Unforgiven Music Composed and Conducted by Dimitri Tiomkin The Way West Music Composed by Bronislau Kaper Conducted by Andre Previn ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST... The Unforgiven, based on a novel by Alan Le May (The Searchers) was a serious-minded western directed by John Huston, starring Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, Audie Murphy, Lillian Gish, and Charles Bickford. It was a film plagued by problems - the original director, Delbert Mann, was replaced by John Huston, who constantly fought with star Burt Lancaster and his production company, Hecht-Hill-Lancaster. The film's female star, Audrey Hepburn broke her back during filming when she fell from her horse, co-star Audie Murphy almost drowned while duck hunting, and director Huston's mind seemed to be on other things instead of the actual film he was directing. But none of those behind-the-scenes dramas really mattered, because at the end of the day The Unforgiven was a handsome film (shot by the great Franz Planer), well directed by Huston, with a riveting story and characters, and wonderfully acted by the large cast. Like Le May's The Searchers, The Unforgiven has racism as its theme and certainly was, for its time, a very adult western. The film's reviews were mostly positive, and it is only in the intervening years that the public consensus on the film became wildly divergent, with some professing it to the be the worst film Huston ever did (Huston thought so, too, apparently), and a film that doesn't work at all, to those who admire the film's direction, acting, and story, and who find the film a splendid western. Dimitri Tiomkin was, for many years, the go-to guy for Western scores. His scores for various classic westerns had a true Americana sound to them, and yet remained unique to Tiomkin and his sound - Duel In The Sun, Red River, High Noon, Gunfight At The O.K. Corral, Rio Bravo, The Alamo and many others. Tiomkin had an incredible gift for creating memorable main themes and was a pioneer in the main title as song with High Noon ("Do Not Forsake Me, O My Darlin'"), for which Tiomkin not only won the Oscar for Best Score, but for Best Song (over the years he was nominated for an astonishing 17 Academy Awards). His score for The Unforgiven is classic Tiomkin, with a wonderful, memorable main theme (this time not done as a song, although it later did have lyrics added by Ned Washington), a theme that is haunting, melancholy, and perfect for the film. The rest of the score is filled with the unique Tiomkin sound - crashing brass, xylophones run amok, beautiful strings, and stirring action music - there's no way not to know it's a Tiomkin score from first note to last. The score was recorded in Rome with the Santa Cecilia Symphony Orchestra, with Tiomkin conducting. The Way West was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by A. B. Guthrie, and is a Western more in the grand tradition; a big, sprawling epic produced by Harold Hecht, with a screenplay by Ben Maddow (who'd also written the script for The Unforgiven) and Mitch Lindemann. The film is colorful, fun, and compelling, as it follows a wagon train of settlers from Missouri as they make their way to Oregon, and, thanks to cameraman William H. Clothier, it is absolutely stunning to look at. Andrew McLaglen was a fine director and he gets terrific performances from his large cast, including Kirk Douglas, Robert Mitchum, Richard Widmark, Lola Albright, Sally Field (in her film debut), Stubby Kaye, and two stalwart western character actors, Jack Elam and Harry Carey, Jr. The score by Bronislau Kaper has its own Americana sound and is a total delight. It begins with some narration from the film, which segues into a song (with lyrics by Mack David) sung by The Serendipity Singers. Then the score proper begins, and it is filled with rousing action music, playful music, and stunningly beautiful music, all in Kaper's distinctive style and all of which captures the film's myriad moods and scenes beautifully. Kaper didn't do that many westerns, but the ones he did do were really interesting and he was a master craftsman, who, like Tiomkin, had an incredible gift for memorable melodies, as you can hear in his wonderful scores for Invitation, Lili, Auntie Mame, the 1962 Mutiny On The Bounty, among many others. The Unforgiven was originally released on a United Artists LP, and then as part of a limited edition Film Score Monthly Western CD box set. The Way West was originally issued as an LP on United Artists, and then as a limited edition on CD by Intrada - both releases sold out instantly, and so it's nice to be able to make them available to those who missed out, those who didn't even get a chance to find out about them, and fans of great western scores. Both scores have been completely remastered for this release. Visit Our Website This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping. CD will ship by the second week of October - however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we've been averaging four weeks early).
