Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “That Good Night” from 2017, directed by Eric Styles, featuring music by Guy Farley. The film, based on the stage play by N.J. Crisp, tells the story of Ralph, a successful writer whose life is full of regrets. With a curious personality that’s both charming and rude, Ralph has built a number of “love him or hate him” relationships over his life – unfortunately, his family seems to fall into the latter group. Now in his seventies and terminally ill, Ralph sets out two goals before entering that good night: he wants to mend his relationship with long-abandoned son Michael and also make sure that he is not a burden to his much younger second wife, Anna. “That Good Night” marks the last screen performance of John Hurt who passed away in January of 2017. Hurt is joined by Charles Dance and Sofia Helin in a stellar cast. The music for “That Good Night” was written by Guy Farley (“Modigliani”, “Maria di Nazaret”). Farley provided an elegant underscore, recorded with a small orchestra of strings, woodwinds, harp, piano, and world instruments such as a Cavaquino, Spanish guitars, an accordion and ethnic percussion which capture the Mediterranean flavour of the Portuguese Algarve, while the chamber orchestra works its magic on the emotional element of the story. The score, one of Farley’s best to date, is filled with memorable themes and motifs that are both uplifting and touching, paying tribute to the character’s struggles and the film’s hopeful message. Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “Lisa” from 2001, directed by Pierre Grimblat, featuring music by Gabriel Yared. The film tells the story of young filmmaker Sam (Benoît Magimel) who becomes obsessed with an unfinished 1939 picture entitled “Princess Marushka”. In fact, Sam’s fascination is not with the film, but with its lead actor Sylvain Marceau (Sagamore Stévenin) who had mysteriously disappeared during World War II. What happened to him? Was the film unfinished because of his disappearance? Where had he gone? In order to answer the question, Sam decides to make a documentary about Sylvain and sets off to interview all surviving friends and colleagues who might have some insight into his character. His most interesting lead in the investigation is the eponymous Lisa Morain (played by Jeanne Moreau and a young Marion Cotillard) who recounts her torrid love affair with the actor on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. The music for “Lisa” was written by Academy Award winner Gabriel Yared (“The English Patient”). His large orchestral score was recorded at Abbey Road and is brimming with memorable, haunting themes and motifs. The focus is on the love between the heroine and Sylvain as the darker themes of the German occupation keep looming in the shadows with the main theme being passionate, powerful and moving, providing a glimmer of hope for the protagonists in the film. “Lisa” vanished soon after its premiere and the score has been neglected since – until now. One of Gabriel Yared's most moving works receives its first release ever and it is a delightful discovery for fans of the composer and passionate movie music in general. That's all you gonna get. Zu dem Ausgangsmaterial haben wir diese Anmerkung im FSM-Forum veröffentlicht: "We had planned to use Roy Budd's original tapes. However, they were damaged by a flood and were unusable. We therefore asked Sony/EMI whether they can supply the tapes in their archive which they kindly did. They certainly didn't have to since the mechanical rights lie with Roy Budd's estate and Sony has had nothing to gain from our release whatsoever. Unfortunately, the only tapes Sony had were the tapes used for the LP which indeed doesn't represent the complete score but which is missing ~10 minutes. You can blame it on God, on fate, or on the Flying Spaghetti Monster if you want to." Es ist kein Re-Recording. Ich weiß nicht, warum wir "uneigentlich" sind, aber die Musiken verkaufen sich schlecht. Hinzu kommt oftmals eine komplexe Rechtelage, die mit Budds ehemaligem Agenten zusammenhängt. Aber das würde jetzt zu weit führen. Das Cover hat durchaus einen Grund, wie sich (hoffentlich) im nächsten Jahr erschließen wird. Wir sind ziemlich stolz drauf. Cue Assemblings finden wir grundsätzlich atemberaubend uninteressant. Durch untypische Herangehensweisen bleibt das Leben interessant.

Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “Wild Geese II” from 1985, directed by Peter Hunt. The film is loosely connected to “The Wild Geese” from 1978, starring Richard Burton, Richard Harris and Hardy Kruger. Unfortunately, Burton passed away shortly before the filming of the sequel began and some sections of the screenplay had to be re-written. The story revolves around top level Nazi Rudolph Hess (Laurence Olivier) who has important intel on prominent political figures. Ruthless TV executives Michael and Kathy Lukas (John Terry and Barbara Carrera) want to get him out of his Spandau prison to appear on live television. Faulkner declines their offer to lead such a mission, but recommends Lebanese American soldier turned mercenary Haddad (Scott Glenn) as a substitute who agrees to take on the mission that soon turns into a nightmare for everyone involved. The music was composed by Roy Budd (“Get Carter”) who had already written the music for “The Wild Geese”. Budd had to create new musical material for the sequel and delivered a more contemporary direction for underscoring the mission. Besides the funky action music which is the obvious main draw of the score, there are plenty of other great moments in the score, such as a catchy main title march and the soulful ballad “Say You’ll Be Mine”, sung by Peter Hoffmann and dedicated to Budd’s wife Sylvia Budd who served as co-producer of this album. This release of “Wild Geese II” fills an important hole in Roy Budd’s discography. A soundtrack was originally released on LP by CBS Records, but it had no legitimate CD release since then. The score was carefully restored and mastered from the original tapes. Recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra, the music sounds as fresh as if it was recorded today and stands as one of Budd’s very best works. The film tells the story of 19-year old Cabella who receives a mysterious key as her only inheritance from her recently deceased uncle. The girl decides to literally unlock the secrets of her past by moving to a run-down villa in Italy. She slowly makes friends with three sisters and also befriends the ghost of a nine-year-old chimney sweeper named Angelo who died in the house long ago. Together with her new friends, Cabella starts to learn more about her mysterious past as she also rediscovers her “joie de vivre”… The music for “The Italian Key“ was written by Tuomas Kantelinen who is also the producer of the film and the husband of its director. Since the film has a vintage look about it is meant to be an old-finished film in many respects, Kantelinen decided to pay tribute to that musically by delivering a romantic score for orchestra, filled with several themes and motifs that describe the characters and their surroundings. Like the film, the music is charming, sunny and optimistic without lacking the depth the subject matter requires. After six years, the music for “The Italian Key” finally receives its well-deserved release as one of the best works of Tuomas Kantelinen. Caldera Records is proud to present George Kallis’ original score for the motion picture “The Black Prince” from 2017, directed by Kavi Raz. The films tells the touching and exhilarating story of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last king of Punjab before its British annexation. After the First Anglo-Sikh War, the king sees himself torn between his own country and England and struggles to regain his own kingdom. The title role of the Maharaja is portrayed by Punjabi poet and singer Satinder Sartaaj who delivers a strong performance in the film that also stars Jason Flemyng and Amanda Root. One of the main stars of the film is the music, composed and conducted by George Kallis who has composed music for over 20 films and Emmy and BAFTA award-winning TV programs. With this colourful and highly entertaining score, highlighting tender moments and fierce action, Kallis delivers one of his strongest efforts to date. The score showcases several memorable themes and leitmotifs, such as a main theme for the Maharaja, a theme for his mother and for his first wife, with several other motifs which portray Punjab and its characteristics. There are delicate elements of ethnic music in the score but with its soaring orchestral concept “The Black Prince” has its own universal language that connects all countries. The music was recorded in Hungary, conducted by the composer himself. Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “A Esmorga” from 2014, directed by Ignacio Vilar. Eduardo Blanco Amor’s novel of the same title is one of the most well known books in Galician language, but although it was already written in 1959, it took 55 years until a film based on the book was made in the Galician language with Galician actors. The book and therefore the film tell the story of three struggling men and accompanies them for 24 hours while they roam through the city, visit the pubs and brothels, before they find their tragic end. The film was a major hit with audiences and critics and became the most successful Galician film to date. Now, three years later, Caldera Records pays tribute to its achingly beautiful score by Zeltia Montes. The Spanish composer, who recently made headlines with her score for the documentary “Frágil Equilibrio”, has been very influenced by the music of Arvo Pärt and it clearly shows in this score. The music was written for a piano only to convey a sense of intimacy to the music and therefore the film, performed by Zeltia Montes herself. She delivers three key themes which are not only memorable in themselves but also receive several variations throughout the melancholy, minimalist score which is Montes’ most personal of all her works. It was high time to make this stirringly emotional and tragic score available on CD. Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “Adam Resurrected” from 2008, directed by Paul Schrader and starring Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe and Derek Jacobi. Goldblum stars as Adam Stein, a clown who is sent to a concentration camp in WWII. There he meets Commandant Klein, played by Willem Dafoe, whose dog Stein pretends to be by behaving like an animal. After the war, Stein is sent to a mental asylum where he meets a young boy who pretends to be a dog. This encounter brings back old memories for Stein which will haunt him forever. The film is based on a novel by Yoram Kaniuk and was directed by none other than Paul Schrader, the enfant terrible of the New Hollywood and the man behind the scripts for “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull”. The music was written by Gabriel Yared who delivered one of his most unusual and daring works and also one of his most satisfying. Yared, who won an Oscar for his work on “The English Patient”, wrote the score for an orchestra but later abandoned the idea to create a score which wouldn’t make the film into a schmaltzy melodrama. Instead, the composer used a solo piano, solo violin, solo guitar and solo cello to come up with the right tone for the film. These instruments are accompanied by electronic textures, bringing back memories of Yared’s earliest scores from the 80s which are developed further here. The French-Libanese musician melts the sorrowful main theme of the film, beautifully played by Bogdan Vacarescu, with sometimes harrowing and sensual electronic counterpoints, fusing score and source music and thus delivering one of his most original and complex works which is deeply touching even outside the film. The music was recorded at Abbey Road in London and is now available for the first time on CD. No compilation can highlight the versatility of the British composer as well as this one: For “Anthropoid”, Farley wrote a moving choral piece, while “Tula: The Revolt” shows his sure symphonic hand for romantic melodies and aggressive action. “Irish Jam” is a colourful score featuring influences from Irish folklore and “Dot.com” is a lively composition for small orchestra and solo instruments such as guitar and harmonica, portraying the joie de vivre of village life in southern Europe. All four scores are bound together by their catchy melodies and transparent orchestration, making Farley one of the most inspired British musicians who can always be trusted to deliver high-quality work. Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture The Welts (Pregi) from 2004, directed by Magdalena Piekorz and starring Michal Zebrowski and Agnieszka Grochowska. The Polish movie tells the tale of Wojciech who was mistreated by his father at a young age and as a result becomes increasingly troubled when growing up. Although he does not want to repeat the same mistakes his father did, he has problems connecting to people. Then he meets Tania, his chance for redemption. But will he be able to solve his problems and become somebody who can not only love but who can also be loved by others? The music for the directorial debut by Magdalena Piekorz was composed by Adrian Konarski, a highly regarded musician for films, theater and concert in his native Poland. These Polish roots are evident in his music, bearing resemblance to work of his native countryman Wojciech Kilar in their melodic inspiration, thematic development and transparent arrangements. Performed by a small orchestra with haunting instrumental solos for piano and woodwinds, the music for “The Welts” is full of melancholy and yet offering a glimpse of hope for the troubled character of the movie. Konarski works with several themes and motifs such as a love theme which receives its variations throughout the score. Furthermore, Caldera presents several other works by Adrian Konarski, mounting to a running time of 80 minutes in total: Drowsiness and Citizen are two other elegiac scores for movies by Magdalena Piekorz, performed by orchestra and soloists such as a mesmerizing soprano. Several other pieces also assembled on this compilation were written by Konarski for different projects, offering a vast variety of melodies and styles. Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the motion picture “Under Suspicion” from 1991, directed by Simon Moore and starring Liam Neeson, Laura San Giacomo and Kenneth Cranham. Neeson plays a former cop who now works as a private investigator whose main job it is to collect evidence of adultery for his clients who wish to settle divorce cases. Neeson’s character runs into trouble soon though when he orders his wife to go to a hotel room with a well known painter in order to take photographs of the two and sell them to the wife of the painter. Things get nasty when the pair is shot death – and one of the prime suspects is: the investigator himself. Christopher Gunning delivered one of his darkest, most brooding scores which at times evokes the spirit of Bernard Herrmann’s well known and much celebrated style to underscore suspense and enhance the already dangerous situations in the film’s scenes. Gunning wrote several themes and motifs, notably a love theme for Neeson’s and Giacomo’s characters which receives its variations throughout the whole score. The highlight of the score is undoubtedly the famous hanging sequence for which the composer wrote a 7 minute piece which builds steadily until it collapses at its climax and makes your adrenalin rush through your body. Deservedly, Gunning won an Ivor Novello Award for his work on “Under Suspicion” in 1991. This is the third entry of a Gunning score in the Caldera catalog. Caldera Records is proud to present its newest CD with a deluxe edition of “Modigliani” by Guy Farley.”Modigliani” is probably the best known score by the British composer whose scores “Secret Sharer”, “Maria di Nazaret” and “L’uomo che sognava con le aquile” were already released on Caldera. Indeed, the score for the 2004 movie by Mick Davis starring Andy Garcia has a special place in the heart of its composer and is without doubt his richest work as it combines sensual symphonic compositions, ethnic music and arrangements of songs by Sasha Lazard. The main theme from “Modigliani” is a favourite of many soundtrack fans and probably Farley’s most beloved composition to date. The soundtrack was released ten years ago by Milan Records but the CD sold out quickly and can be found rarely on eBay and only for high prices. Because of that, we not only decided to re-release the score but also to give it a special treatment. The CD features a different presentation of the score than the Milan CD as we were never happy with the sequencing of it. Furthermore, it offers lots of special bonuses and a running time of over 70 minutes. Caldera Records is proud to present a two CD set with works by beloved composer Abel Korzeniowski. Before he rose to fame with scores like “A Single Man” and “Penny Dreadful”, the Polish born musician wrote several compositions for stage plays in his home country. Among them were “I Served the King of England” (2003), “The Odyssey” (2005), “Kafka” (2001), “Antigone” (1996) and “The Tempest” (2003) which celebrate their premiere release on this set. Excerpts from some of these works were previously released on a digital promo by the composer. The works presented here show the wide variety of styles Korzeniowski applies due to his incredible talent. “I Served the King of England” is one of his most original scores with a distinctive Eastern European flavour due to the use of a hammered dulcimer and accordion. “The Odyssey” is something completely different altogether, evoking ancient Greek music mixed with modern Western influences, using traditional as well as medieval instruments while “Kafka” is probably the quirkiest music ever written by its composer – and yet surprisingly sorrowful and dark at times. “Antigone” is as experimental as “Kafka”; written for choir, the complex music is certainly demanding for the singers but rewarding to listen to with its unusual harmonies, counterpoints and motifs which are not obvious at first. “The Tempest” is more traditional in that sense and immediately accessible with its elegant melodies and interesting musical colors. If you either like Korzeniowski because of his biggest successes like “A Single Man” or if you are just discovering this composer, this CD set is the perfect accompaniment for you: a most diverse collection which presents treasures to discover for everybody. Winner of the IFMCA Best Documentary Score 2011 Caldera Records is proud to present the original score for the American documentary The Wind Gods from 2011, composed by Pinar Toprak. The movie chronicles the 10 year quest of famous entrepreneur Larry Ellison who set sail with his ‘Oracle’ to win the America’s Cup and therefore bring the prestigious sailing prize home to the US after it had been won by foreigners in the past years. The documentary which is both an adventure, an insight into the mindset of the well-known billionaire and a love letter to sailing, is narrated by Jeremy Irons and features the magnum opus by its composer Toprak. The Turkish-born musician delivered a grand, sweeping and epic score which shows how exciting the music for a documentary can be: filled with several memorable themes, a detailed orchestration and a lot of swashbuckling action, the music brims with masculine forces and female sensibilities. Deservedly, Toprak was awarded the IFMCA award (International Film Music Critics Association) for Best Documentary Score in 2011 and trumped out prestigious colleagues like George Fenton and Patrick Doyle for their efforts that year. The movie is based on the famous novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier which had already been made into a successful movie by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940. It tells the tragic love story between a rich gentleman and his second wife who not only has to cope with an obsessive and evil housekeeper but also with the shadow of the first wife who obviously died under strange circumstances... Christopher Gunning wrote one of his most beautiful and rich scores for this adaption, capturing every aspect of the story in his music. While there is a dark and melancholic main theme, the romance between the (happy) couple is described in a lush melody for the full orchestra which receives its variations throughout the whole score. The tense moments in the movie are accompanied by aggressive outbursts from the orchestra, often featuring prominent, difficult and expressive solos from the cello. The movie is loosely based on the famous novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy which was already filmed in the late 70s by Roman Polanski. Winterbottom decides to let the story take place in India where a working class girl falls in love with a businessman. Although they have mutual feelings, it seems impossible to pursue their happiness due to their different traditions and upbringings. Their struggle is put into notes by Shigeru Umebayashi (2046, House of Flying Daggers) who delivers probably the saddest music of his outstanding career. His soundtrack consists of several themes for string orchestra. While the waltz for Trishna works as a homage to Umebayashi's famous piece for Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love, his theme for Trishna and Jay and the heartfelt main theme run through the album in elegant variations, showing the emotional struggle of the films main characters. The movie is based on the famous book of the same title by Albert Cohen who writes about a troubled love affair in Switzerland during the 1930s. Cohen portrays Solal, who starts an affair with the beautiful Ariadne, the protestant wife of one of his employees. The forbidden passion and the political dealings prior to World War II create an unbearably tense atmosphere both on paper – and on film. The tense atmosphere can be experienced in the music by Gabriel Yared as well. The Oscar-winning composer (The English Patient, The Talented Mr. Ripley) wrote a delicate, elegant and intimate score for symphony orchestra which is built around a fragile waltz which serves as the main theme of the soundtrack. The theme is surrounded by sorrowful string adagios, catchy melodies for solo instruments such as the clarinet and the piano as well as inspired suspense passages which Yared uses for demanding solo passages with complicated rhythms. The movie stars Emily Mortimer and Woody Harrelson as a couple who travels from China to Moscow only to get involved in a dangerous drug smuggling crime, making their holiday to a fight for survival. For Transsiberian, Vilallonga wrote a moody, dark and yet at times surprisingly tender and melodic score for orchestra and solo-musicians like the cello which is featured prominently with virtuous solos. Coupled with Transsiberian is the music for the well-known Spanish production Princesas about the friendship of two prostitutes and their struggle in both their lives and their profession. Vilallonga provides them with a tender main theme which receives its variations throughout the whole score with solos by piano, violin, cello, clarinet and accordion. Vilallonga, whose most famous project is the silent black and white-movie Blancanieves, is at the top of his game with these two original works which deserve to be heard on CD.
