  6. “[Islands in the Stream] was so special and to me it’s always been one of my best scores. Every day I’d go down to work on it, [sitting] at the Moviola with tears in my eyes .... It’s a great film.” —Jerry Goldsmith, 1982 Intrada presents a newly mastered and edited edition of the original soundtrack to the 1977 Paramount Pictures film Islands in the Stream. The score was of such personal importance to Jerry Goldsmith that he approached Intrada in 1986, just a year after it had been formed and a few months after the release of his latest score, Poltergeist II, to seek the label's interest in creating a new recording of the score in Hungary. Intrada jumped at the chance. The brilliant recording has been in the catalog continuously since it was released in the late '80s. Since licensing and cost complications precluded a release of the original tracks at the time, the new recording was a godsend to Goldsmith enthusiasts, with the exception of a few omissions that Goldsmith couldn't get right with the Hungarian orchestra. In the 2010s, things had changed and the Film Score Monthly label was able to release the original tracks, but it has since been out of print for some time. With some slight modifications using newer technology, Doug Fake and Chris Malone were able to elevate the quality of the recording for this brand new release. The score is beautiful, deeply emotional and introspective, and at times simply thrilling. From the reflection of the inner feelings of the main character and his relationship with his family to the shark attack, lengthy Marlin sequence and rescue sequence in the last act, Goldsmith provides quite the musical adventure, presented in complete form with new notes by Frank K. DeWald. The film is a drama directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway. The film follows the life of Thomas Hudson (George C. Scott), a successful painter living in the Bahamas during World War II. Struggling with his past and the impact of the war on his family, Hudson navigates complex relationships with his estranged wife, his children, and a series of romantic entanglements. The narrative explores themes of love, loss and redemption against the backdrop of a changing world, ultimately reflecting on the human condition and the search for meaning amidst chaos. 8.

  13. One of Jerry Goldsmith’s most unusual horror projects comes to CD in complete form courtesy Varèse Sarabande’s Deluxe Edition. The Other (1972) used bucolic 1935 Connecticut to tell a truly disturbing story of twin boys with dangerous supernatural powers. Directed by Robert Mulligan (To a Kill Mockingbird) from a script and book by Tom Tryon, and costarring Uta Hagan and Diana Muldaur, the film has earned a cult reputation as a unique and affecting piece of 1970s horror. Jerry Goldsmith tackled The Other amongst a string of oddball film and television projects during the changing tastes of the early ’70s. At the peak of his creative powers, he managed to combine the polar opposites of The Other’s tones into a perfect unity: beautiful music for the film’s nostalgic setting and childhood intimacy (with a gorgeous main theme), and dark strains for the unspeakable horrors of the story’s revelations. Long admired as one of Goldsmith’s most offbeat horror scores—made even more mysterious by the fact that cues were dropped from the finished film—The Other was released in an extended suite by Varèse Sarabande alongside The Mephisto Waltz in 1997. This Deluxe Edition features the complete stereo score in a new audio restoration by Chris Malone with liner notes by Tim Greiving. The Deluxe Edition Produced for Varèse Sarabande Records by Cary E. 15. What Lies Beneath (2000) was a first for filmmaker Robert Zemeckis: a serious, adult-minded ghost story starring Michelle Pfeiffer and, in a rare turn (and twist) as the villain, Harrison Ford. Originally developed for Steven Spielberg, the film was a Hitchcockian throwback of slow-burn suspense, with gorgeous Vermont locations supporting the A-list talent. Scoring What Lies Beneath was, as always for Zemeckis, his long-time collaborator, Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). Silvestri conjured up a dark, moody soundscape of suspense, orchestral violence and eerie beauty for the supernatural hauntings and real-life threat that is closer than the heroine realizes—ably recalling the spirit of the classic Hitchcock–Herrmann partnership, with Silvestri’s own vernacular and modern dramatic sense. Varèse Sarabande released What Lies Beneath as a 9-track, 30-minute program at the time of the film. This long-awaited Deluxe Edition premieres the complete score in a 25-track, 60-minute program, with new liner notes by Daniel Schweiger interviewing screenwriter Clark Gregg. 16. Intrada announces a new, 2-CD expansion of James Newton Howard's beloved score to the Walt Disney animated feature Dinosaur (2000). The score was the first of three animated features Howard would score during that time for Disney, followed shortly thereafter by Atlantis and Treasure Planet. Originally released in a generous 51-minute program, this new Intrada release features the full score running some 82 minutes, featuring a wealth of new material previously only heard in the film. One of the absolute highlights is the entire opening sequence, relying primarily on music as there is no dialog. It's well over an hour of soaring themes, aggressive action music, comedic moments—everything you'd expect from a prehistoric dinosaur adventure. For this new release, Intrada was given access to the complete multi-track sessions stored at Disney, which were remixed by Chris Malone. Douglass Fake assembled the album program (one of the last projects he was able to personally produce before his passing). Fake was a huge fan of Newton Howard's work and was thrilled with the opportunity to revisit this epic work. He would have been proud of the final result. The film is a groundbreaking blend of traditional animation and computer-generated imagery. Directed by Eric Leighton and Ralph Zondag, the film follows the journey of an iguanodon named Aladar, who is raised by a family of lemurs after being orphaned. As he grows, Aladar and his adoptive family face the challenges of a changing world and struggle to survive against the backdrop of a dramatic asteroid collision. Dinosaur is notable for its innovative visual effects, which combine CGI dinosaurs with live-action backgrounds, creating a visually stunning and immersive prehistoric world. CD 1 THE SCORE 01.
