  3. Dragon’s Domain Records presents the original soundtrack to SLIPSTREAM, featuring music composed by Elmer Bernstein (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE GREAT ESCAPE, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, FAR FROM HEAVEN) for the 1989 science fiction adventure film directed by Steven Lisberger (TRON), written by Tony Kayden and Bill Bauer, starring Bob Peck (Edge Of Darkness, Jurassic Park), Mark Hamill (STAR WARS, BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES), Bill Paxton (ALIENS, TWISTER, NEAR DARK), Kitty Aldridge, Susan, Leong, Ricco Ross, Robbie Coltrane and Ben Kingsley (SNEAKERS). SLIPSTREAM is a post-apocalyptic action-adventure story taking place in Earth’s near future after environmental destruction has rendered the Earth a rocky, windblown wasteland over which a river of wind, called the slipstream, becomes the only conduit for travel. Matt Owens (Paxton) is a bounty hunter who swipes a wanted killer named Byron (Peck) from the custody of officer Will Tasker (Hamill) so he can collect the bounty for himself. Transporting Byron in his aircraft through the slipstream, Owens evades Tasker and his tracker, Belitski (Aldridge), while seeking a place where he can cash in on Byron. Along the way, Owens realizes Byron is more than he seems and decides to become his protector from an increasingly unstable Tasker. SLIPSTREAM was an English production, with exteriors filmed in Cappadocia, Turkey, and the rest at Pinewood Studios. The film was produced by STAR WARS’ Gary Kurtz, who had come on board as a favor for a friend. The project reunited Kurtz with Mark Hamill for the first time since the THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, as it did with Kurtz’s co-producer Steve Lanning, a second-unit director on EMPIRE. When SLIPSTREAM went into post-production in late 1988, Elmer Bernstein was suggested as a likely candidate to provide its score. His music for HEAVY METAL (1981), SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE (1983), GHOSTBUSTERS (1984), and THE BLACK CAULDRON (1985) were picturesque and grandly sweeping scores. Bernstein was delighted at the proposition to compose a broad score for the film. He invested the music with passionate melodies, ferocious action melodies and provocative sonic eloquence, aided by an exuberant performance from the London Symphony Orchestra. Previously released on compact disc in 2011 and long sold out, Dragon’s Domain Records brings SLIPSTREAM back to the marketplace featuring music composed by the great Elmer Bernstein, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, with a new mastering by James Nelson of Digital Outland, liner notes by noted author Randall Larson and new artwork designed by Mark Banning. SLIPSTREAM is expected to begin shipping the week of March 24th, 2025. 01. Prologue And Pursuit (3:12) 02. Escape (3:00) 03. Dreams (4:02) 04. Lost Android (3:02) 05. Slipstream People (2:49) 06. 4.
  5. LLLCD 1657 Music composed and conducted by Michael Kamen Limited edition of 5,000 units Exclusive release: Sold exclusively here at www.lalalandrecords.com and 007Store.com for the first 90 days of release La-La Land Records, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, EON Productions and Universal Music Enterprises mark the 35th Anniversary of the sixteenth 007 film Licence To Kill, with a remastered and expanded 2-CD re-issue of composer Michael Kamen’s original motion picture score. Produced by Albert R. Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, the 1989 film stars Timothy Dalton as James Bond in his second turn as 007 and is helmed by John Glen, directing his fifth Bond film. Oscar® nominated composer Michael Kamen joins the Bond music fold and unleashes a robust and propulsive score to Licence To Kill, a perfect complement to the harder-edged story, which sees Bond seeking revenge for the maiming of his friend Felix Leiter (David Hedison) and the killing of his new bride Della (Priscilla Barnes). Kamen’s thematic work honors the series’ iconic musical legacy with exciting variations of the classic “James Bond Theme,” while bringing his own unique style to the world of James Bond. Expanded beyond the original soundtrack album, Licence To Kill hits its target like never before within this deluxe presentation, which also includes two versions of the film’s title song, performed by Gladys Knight. Produced by Neil S. Bulk and mastered by Doug Schwartz from 1/4" stereo tapes and 3-track mag provided by MGM, this is a special 2-CD release, limited to only 5,000 units. The score presentation is spread across both discs, while Disc Two also includes the remastered 1989 soundtrack album, as well as additional music. The exclusive, new liner notes are by film music journalist and author Jon Burlingame and the art direction is by Dan Goldwasser. TRACK LISTING: DISC 1 SCORE PRESENTATION 91:36 1. 7. Dragon’s Domain Records presents STAR TREK: A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION, featuring music composed for STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES (1966-1969), performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Tony Bremner. STAR TREK: A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION presents music composed by Sol Kaplan, Samuel Matlovsky, Jerry Fielding, Joseph Mullendore and George Duning from all three seasons of the beloved show that starred William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. It’s hard to imagine now as, for over a decade now, all of the music written and recorded for the original 1966 series has been available on CD and digital formats. But for more than a decade and a half after the show had been in cancelled in 1969, not a note of music from the show was available to listen to in any format. That began to change abruptly in 1985 when several record labels began to release Star Trek music. Producer John Steven Lasher was the first to release two volumes of Star Trek music during this time. He employed the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and had arrangements made for this symphonic ensemble, giving the scores a lusher sound and arranging the short cues into lengthy suites for an improved listening experience. STAR TREK: A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION presents music from the following episodes: ‘The Enemy Within’, ‘I, Mudd’, ‘Spectre Of The Gun’, ‘The Conscience Of The King’, ‘The Paradise Syndrome’ and ‘Is There No Truth In Beauty’. Originally presented as suites across two separate volumes on vinyl and compact disc on Label X, those volumes have become scarce over the years. Dragon’s Domain Records is proud to bring these recordings back into the marketplace in a TWO DISC presentation with the suites separated and the music newly remastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland along with new liner notes written by author Jeff Bond including the classic notes written for these albums, featuring comments from the producers and composers Gerald Fried and George Duning. STAR TREK: A SYMPHONIC CELEBRATION is a limited edition release and is expected to begin shipping the week of March 24th, 2025 CD 1 01. 8. LLLCD 1659 Music Composed and Conducted by John Williams Limited edition of 2000 units $31.98 La-La Land Records, Sony Music and Columbia Masterworks proudly present a remastered and expanded 2-CD release of renowned composer John Williams’ original motion picture score to the 1969 feature film period drama THE REIVERS, based upon the novel by William Faulkner and starring Steve McQueen, Mitch Vogel and Sharon Farrell, and directed by Mark Rydell. The treasured collaborative relationship between Maestro John Williams (JAWS, E.T., SCHINDLER’S LIST) and filmmaker Steven Spielberg had its roots in the director’s admiration for Williams’ brilliant score to this nostalgic 1969 drama, in which Faulkner chronicles the arrival of the automobile in the American south at the dawn of the 20th century. This new remastered and expanded 2-CD reissue, featuring the full score presentation for the first time, is an Americana wonder – beautiful, dramatic, heartfelt – an ideal match for Faulkner’s blend of playful humor and vividly drawn prose, conjuring the warm glow of an “endless summer” as experienced by a child on the cusp of adolescence. 9. LLLCD 1646 Music by Trevor Jones Limited edition of 5000 Units La-La Land Records and The Jim Henson Company present an expanded 3-CD soundtrack set of renowned composer Trevor Jones’ (CLIFFHANGER) original motion picture score to the 1982 landmark fantasy feature film THE DARK CRYSTAL, directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. THE DARK CRYSTAL was a boundary-exploding feat of puppetry and cinema, re-inventing what had been previously thought possible and resulting in a breathtaking achievement of immersive world-building that still retains its power and wonder to this day. A vital part of this endeavor’s success is composer Trevor Jones’ outstanding original music score – a tremendous accomplishment that has also stood the test of time. Now, for the first time ever, this deluxe 3-CD release, conceived, assembled and produced by Trevor Jones himself, features the bounty of music the maestro composed for the initial, longer cut of THE DARK CRYSTAL, in its original intended order. Copies of the master tapes recorded at CTS Wembley were digitized along with the composer’s entire body of work, which is now archived at the University of Leeds. Jones personally reassembled and remastered the audio at Abbey Road for this special presentation. Produced by Trevor Jones and Tim Greiving, and mastered by Andrew Walter under the composer’s sole supervision and approval, this release includes a wealth of previously unreleased music within its newly Expanded Score Soundtrack presentation, which is spread across two discs, while the original 1982 soundtrack program is featured on Disc 3. 11. The wonderful thing about Basil’s score to Quigley Down Under is that it has a sense of fun. – Simon Wincer, director Intrada announces a 35th-anniversary edition of Basil Poledouris' rowdy score to the 1990 MGM film Quigley Down Under. When Intrada released its first edition back in 1990, it was quite an event. Released five years after their first release—Red Dawn—the project gave them the opportunity to work again with Poledouris. Only this time it was for a new film from a major studio. Intrada president Doug Fake fell in love with the score immediately and simply would not stop talking about it or playing it. Poledouris’ music had to capture Quigley’s character and circumstances, and the composer managed to do it while both capturing a classic cinematic western style and expressing his own native romanticism and dramatic power. It was not the first western the composer had scored for the director, having previously worked on the acclaimed miniseries to Lonesome Dove. While a later reissue from Prometheus in 2006 featured the largely complete score (minus an overlay here and a correct take there), it was taken from a 16-bit, 44Khz CD-R of the additional tracks Intrada had retained but had to cut out due to the AFM policy in place at the time. For this new release, MGM provided us access to the master sessions on 24-track 2˝ tape, which we had transferred into 24-bit, 96Khz high resolution. We turned these over to Grammy-nominated producer Mike Matessino to mix, assemble and master to create the definitive release of one of Basil Poledouris’ finest scores. To cap off the release, the album features liner notes by Jeff Bond. Watch the album trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bqDKmwhfB0 The film stars Tom Selleck, Alan Rickman and Laura San Giacomo. Matthew Quigley (Selleck) is an American sharpshooter who travels to Australia after being hired by a wealthy cattle baron, Elliott Marston (Rickman). Upon arrival, Quigley learns that Marston wants him to use his long-range rifle skills to hunt and kill Indigenous Australians. Disgusted, Quigley refuses and violently opposes Marston, which leads to him being beaten and left for dead in the Outback. With the help of Crazy Cora (Giacomo), a woman struggling with past trauma, Quigley survives and begins a quest for justice, using his sharpshooting skills to take down Marston and his men. 15. Intrada and Volta Music present a brand-new recording of Dimitri Tiomkin's 1958 Oscar-winning score to The Old Man and the Sea. The album was recorded with regular Intrada favorite, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, under the baton of Richard Kaufman. The Old Man and the Sea was a golden opportunity for a composer. Rife with atmosphere and notably short on dialogue, the picture called for a composer who could “think big” and create a sprawling musical canvas reflecting the film’s theme of man vs. nature. In the mid-1950s, few (if any) film composers were routinely producing large works on the scale of Dimitri Tiomkin. Tiomkin composed nearly 80 minutes of rich orchestral underscore. His music encompasses a wide range of moods, including passages that reflect the lush seascapes and breathtaking sunsets of Howe’s cinematography with Impressionistic tone color and rhythm; bold dramatic cues for Santiago’s struggle with the marlin; periodic references to Latin-American rhythms for the film’s Cuban setting and quiet moments of repose to depict the tender relationship between Santiago and Manolin. Inspired by Hemingway’s story, Tiomkin crafted a score that supports the drama, in his words, “in the style of a symphonic poem for concert.” Five principal themes unify the mammoth composition. Featuring gorgeous cover art by Stéphane Coedel and liner notes by Frank K. DeWald, Warren M. Sherk and Patrick Russ, the CD includes nearly 130 minutes of music—the complete score plus additional arrangements. Remarkably, the original full-score manuscripts have survived for nearly 70 years thanks to Dimitri Tiomkin’s own preservation efforts. He donated all his music to the Dimitri Tiomkin Collection in the Cinematic Arts Library at The University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and the Warner Bros. Archives, also located on the USC campus. The Old Man and the Sea is a film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novella, directed by John Sturges and starring Spencer Tracy as the aging Cuban fisherman Santiago. Struggling with a long stretch of bad luck, Santiago embarks on a solitary fishing expedition, determined to catch a giant marlin that has eluded him. After an epic battle lasting several days, he successfully catches the fish but faces new challenges as he struggles to protect his catch from sharks on his journey home. The film explores themes of perseverance, human dignity, and the struggle between man and nature. Spencer Tracy's performance was widely praised, earning him an Academy Award nomination. 16. Quartet Records, in collaboration with Universal Music Enterprises, presents a 3-CD box set consisting of the three legendary albums that John Barry recorded for Polydor Records between 1972 and 1976, as well as some singles and curiosities. These beautifully designed albums contain some of the composer’s best-known themes, newly arranged and performed, and—in the case of AMERICANS—an original musical work for jazz soloists and orchestra. Ahead of his first public appearance conducting a symphony concert in October 1972, John Barry prepared a series of suites from some of his most successful triumphs, in a lavish and new symphonic orchestration, specially arranged to be performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under his baton. An extensive James Bond suite, a delightful suite from ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, the themes from MIDNIGHT COWBOY and MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS, the theme from the TV series THE ADVENTURER, and two suites from his two Oscar-winning scores of the 1960s: BORN FREE and THE LION IN WINTER. For reasons still unknown, the suite from THE LION IN WINTER was omitted from the original LP, but since it was recorded and included on the master tape, we happily premiere it on this CD. John Barry’s next album, PLAY IT AGAIN, was recorded during several sessions over the course of an entire year beginning in July 1973. Most of these would be recorded with a smaller orchestra and many would be newly conceived arrangements. Barry took the chance to revisit some pieces that were originally conceived as songs, featuring new instrumental arrangements: THE DOVE, THE TAMARIND SEED, MONTE WALSH, as well as songs from his stage musicals LOLITA, MY LOVE and BILLY. He also provided new arrangements of major works such as WALKABOUT, BOOM!, and previously unreleased themes from TV films such as LOVE AMONG THE RUINS and THE GLASS MENAGERIE, as well as the theme from the TV series ORSON WELLES’ GREAT MYSTERIES. During the same period, Barry recorded other similar arrangements for Polydor, which were either released as singles or included on later compilations and reissues of PLAY IT AGAIN, such as A DOLL’S HOUSE, THE WHISPERERS, FOLLOW ME, and different arrangements of his iconic themes for DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER and THE ADVENTURER. The last album in this collection is perhaps the most special: his first concept album. AMERICANS, released in 1976, was a 36-minute compilation of impressions of the sights and sounds of America, written for orchestra and top jazz musicians. It was an ambitious work rooted in the composer’s love of jazz, American movies and the country itself. Barry recruited seven outstanding West Coast jazz soloists: Tony Terran, trumpet; Dick Nash, trombone; Ronnie Lang, alto sax; Jerome Richardson, tenor sax; Artie Kane, keyboards; Mike Rubin, bass; and John Guerin, drums. Israel Baker was concertmaster of the 42-piece orchestra, which was recorded over three days at Glen Glenn Sound on the Paramount Pictures lot. With little promotion and almost no reviews, Americans disappeared quickly from record bins and became a sought-after rarity. But for John Barry, who many years later called it “a thrilling experience,” it was an important artistic achievement—and one of the finest orchestral jazz albums of the era. He would employ alto sax player Ronnie Lang frequently thereafter, especially on jazz-based 1980s scores, and in the late 1990s, Barry would revisit the concept-album idea with his albums The Beyondness of Things and Eternal Echoes. The collection has been painstakingly produced and mastered by Chris Malone from original master tapes. The albums come in three separate jewel cases, housed—along with a separate 24-page booklet—in a handsome hardcover slipcase. Film music journalist and writer, and major Barry connoisseur, Jon Burlingame, provides exclusive, in-depth liner notes. CD1. THE CONCERT JOHN BARRY 1. 17. Quartet Records is proud to present a brand-new recording conducted by Fernando Velázquez of another film score that is either lost or inaccessible – in this case no fewer than five films scores by John Barry: a suspense classic from the ’60s, a film adaptation of a classic play, and three television movies starring Katharine Hepburn. John Barry would have turned 90 on November 3, 2023. The unforgettable music of this five-time Oscar winner continues to be celebrated around the world, and indeed the impact of his innovative scores for dozens of movies from the 1960s through the ’90s continues to reverberate to this day. Disc 1 includes the complete score of SÉANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON (1964), a major work previously missing from the composer’s discography. It was one of his masterpieces for Bryan Forbes that, unfortunately, remained unreleased due to the absence of master tapes. Orchestrated for a small ensemble featuring vibrant percussion and woodwinds, it’s a mysterious, suggestive, unsettling score, reaching its culmination in the long rescue sequence. As a bonus, we have included another rarity that deserves to be rescued. A DOLL’S HOUSE (1973) was one of Barry’s briefest scores: a single, sad melody for celeste, harp, harpsichord and piano, repeated three times during the film’s length. Disc 2 is devoted to three lovely telefilms: a trilogy of period play adaptations starring Katharine Hepburn. LOVE AMONG THE RUINS and THE CORN IS GREEN, both directed by George Cukor in 1975 and 1979, respectively, contain memorable main and love themes, brilliantly orchestrated. The two scores are stylistically similar, featuring strings, woodwinds, piano and harpsichord. THE GLASS MENAGERIE, adapted from Tennessee Williams’ famous play and directed by Anthony Harvey (with whom Barry had previously worked on THE LION IN WINTER) was written for solo piano, performed by the composer himself, who always claimed to be a not-very-good pianist, but it was precisely this innocence and imprecision that Harvey was looking for. For our recording, celebrated pianist Silvia Mkrtchian has approximated the spirit of the original Barry recording. If there is one thing that the five scores presented here have in common, it’s John Barry’s great ability to work with small, almost chamber-like ensembles, seeking the specific sound of each story without being an intrusive voice, always with a British personality of reserve and deftness. Leigh Phillips has painstakingly reconstructed and orchestrated all five scores. They are performed by the prestigious Orquesta de Córdoba conducted by Fernando Velázquez. Recorded and mixed by Marc Blanes, the audio has been meticulously mastered by Chris Malone in the spirit of Barry’s original recordings. Elegant design by Nacho B. Govantes with cover art designed by Jim Titus graces a 28-page booklet with an in-depth essay by film music journalist and writer (and major Barry connoisseur) Jon Burlingame. DISC 1.
