  1. Intrada and Volta Music present a brand-new recording of Dimitri Tiomkin's 1958 Oscar-winning score to The Old Man and the Sea. The album was recorded with regular Intrada favorite, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, under the baton of Richard Kaufman. The Old Man and the Sea was a golden opportunity for a composer. Rife with atmosphere and notably short on dialogue, the picture called for a composer who could “think big” and create a sprawling musical canvas reflecting the film’s theme of man vs. nature. In the mid-1950s, few (if any) film composers were routinely producing large works on the scale of Dimitri Tiomkin. Tiomkin composed nearly 80 minutes of rich orchestral underscore. His music encompasses a wide range of moods, including passages that reflect the lush seascapes and breathtaking sunsets of Howe’s cinematography with Impressionistic tone color and rhythm; bold dramatic cues for Santiago’s struggle with the marlin; periodic references to Latin-American rhythms for the film’s Cuban setting and quiet moments of repose to depict the tender relationship between Santiago and Manolin. Inspired by Hemingway’s story, Tiomkin crafted a score that supports the drama, in his words, “in the style of a symphonic poem for concert.” Five principal themes unify the mammoth composition. Featuring gorgeous cover art by Stéphane Coedel and liner notes by Frank K. DeWald, Warren M. Sherk and Patrick Russ, the CD includes nearly 130 minutes of music—the complete score plus additional arrangements. Remarkably, the original full-score manuscripts have survived for nearly 70 years thanks to Dimitri Tiomkin’s own preservation efforts. He donated all his music to the Dimitri Tiomkin Collection in the Cinematic Arts Library at The University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and the Warner Bros. Archives, also located on the USC campus. The Old Man and the Sea is a film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novella, directed by John Sturges and starring Spencer Tracy as the aging Cuban fisherman Santiago. Struggling with a long stretch of bad luck, Santiago embarks on a solitary fishing expedition, determined to catch a giant marlin that has eluded him. After an epic battle lasting several days, he successfully catches the fish but faces new challenges as he struggles to protect his catch from sharks on his journey home. The film explores themes of perseverance, human dignity, and the struggle between man and nature. Spencer Tracy's performance was widely praised, earning him an Academy Award nomination. 2. Intrada announces an expanded edition of what is regarded as one of John Barry's finest: the Oscar-winning music to the 1985 Universal Pictures film Out of Africa. It is also one of the last albums produced by Doug Fake, to whom this release is dedicated. The lengthy film is sparsely scored, especially considering the expansive nature of the film and beautiful scenery. The 37-minute score is just all the more powerful when it does appear, including the spectacular "Flight Over Africa" sequence. Included in this release are themes and ideas not present on the original MCA album released at the time of the film, premiering some true Barry gems. The release was mastered by Doug Fake and Chris Malone and features liner notes by Barry expert Jon Burlingame. The complete soundtrack is sourced from Dan Wallin’s original half-inch 15 I.P.S., Dolby-A-encoded three-channel stereo mixes made on November 4, 5, 6 & 8, 1985. After the regular scoring sessions were completed, Barry had one last pickup session to record two additional alternate cues. Barry also supervised the traditional African piece and the other source cues. Out of Africa, directed by Sydney Pollack, is a romantic drama based on the autobiographical book by Karen Blixen. The film stars Meryl Streep as Blixen, a Danish woman who moves to Kenya in the early 20th century to run a coffee plantation with her husband, played by Klaus Maria Brandauer. The story follows her personal journey as she navigates the challenges of life in Africa, forms deep relationships with the locals, and embarks on a passionate affair with a British hunter, played by Robert Redford. The film explores themes of love, loss, and the beauty of the African landscape. It won seven Academy Awards in addition to Best Score: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Sound. 3. Quartet Records, in collaboration with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Music and the Henry Mancini Estate, present the premiere release of the original film tracks of Henry Mancini’s Academy Award-nominated, iconic score for the no-less-iconic Blake Edwards film THE PINK PANTHER (1964), celebrating its 60th anniversary. A cornerstone of sophisticated heist comedy and romance, and a classic that began a saga about the clumsiest policeman in history: Inspector Clouseau, brilliantly played by Peter Sellers, who would reprise the role for four more films before his passing. In addition to Sellers, THE PINK PANTHER stars David Niven, Capucine, Robert Wagner and Claudia Cardinale. The film was shot on luxurious locations in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, with some sequences shot in Rome, Paris and Los Angeles. Henry Mancini had previously composed several acclaimed scores for Blake Edwards, including BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S, DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES and the TV series PETER GUNN. The theme he created for the animated main titles of THE PINK PANTHER immediately became a classic—one of the most famous pieces in the history of cinema and popular music culture. Mancini went on to write a fantastic catalog of melodies—all refined with his redoubtable good taste—and an exciting underscore that has remained unreleased for sixty years. Together with Johnny Mercer, he wrote another of his great songs, “It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio Stasera),” which appears on this CD in its original version, performed by Fran Jeffries. This double CD presents in the first disc the actual film score from the original master recordings with the original session at the Samuel Goldwyn Studios in 1963, preserved in mint condition and originally recorded in mono. It also includes some alternate versions and unused music. The second disc contains the remastered album Mancini recorded for RCA with new arrangements of the more commercial tracks. Carefully produced, restored and mastered by Chris Malone, the package includes a 24-page booklet with extensive liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond. DISC ONE. The Original Film Score 1. 4.

  9. Quartet Records, in collaboration with Paramount Pictures, presents a remastered, remixed and expanded edition of one of Henry Mancini’s most evocative and powerful dramatic scores: THE MOLLY MAGUIRES. Directed by Martin Ritt in 1970, starring Sean Connery, Richard Harris, Samantha Eggar and Frank Finlay. Written by Walter Bernstein, the movie is set in Pennsylvania coal country in 1876 and is loosely based on the true story of a small band of Irish miners/terrorists called the Molly Maguires. Henry Mancini was hired to compose the film score after the previous one by Charles Strouse (BONNIE AND CLYDE), famous composer of stage musicals and some film scores, was rejected. Mancini wrote a sensitive, dramatic, delicate score with an Irish flavor that was always close to his heart; he considered it one of his favorites. Originally released on vinyl at the time of its premiere, the album has been reissued on CD several times, most recently in 2012 by Kritzerland in a limited edition that included Mancini’s score and the premiere of the rejected Strouse. For this centenary celebration of Henry Mancini, Chris Malone remixed the score, eliminating the unpleasant hiss in previous editions using new technology. We were also fortunate that new elements appeared in the Paramount vaults, and the score has been released in a more complete form, with more than 20 minutes of previously unreleased cues, and revised and alternate versions. Finally, Mr. Strouse’s unused score has been newly remixed and included in this set. The 24-page package includes in-depth new liner notes by film music writer Jeff Bond. 1. 10. Quartet Records, in association with Paramount Pictures, Sony Music, the Henry Mancini Estate and the Johnny Mercer Estate, presents a remastered and extensively expanded deluxe edition of Blake Edwards’ 1970 big-budget musical-war-romantic comedy DARLING LILI, starring Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson. DARLING LILI is not a conventional musical in which characters burst into song as a narrative substitute for speech or interior monologue. Rather, director Blake Edwards has taken pains to describe it as “a romantic comedy with music.” Inspired by the life of Mata Hari, the film tells the story of supposedly British singer Lili Smith (Julie Andrews), who triumphs in France during World War I. In reality, she’s a German citizen named Lili Schmidt, working for German military espionage. The film was a resounding failure at the box office and led to a several-year hiatus in the relationship between Blake Edwards and Henry Mancini, due to some disagreements and misunderstandings during postproduction. But it was also the movie where Edwards met Julie Andrews, who became his wife for the rest of his life. It was also the first collaboration between Julie Andrews and Henry Mancini, two musical souls destined to meet. Henry Mancini and his favorite lyricist, Johnny Mercer, wrote a number of wonderful songs for the picture, including “Whistle Away the Dark,” one of their most beautiful creations, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Original Song in 1970. Mancini also wrote a powerful symphonic and dramatic score that has never been heard outside of the movie. The score and songs were also nominated in the Best Music Original Songs Score category. This edition has been painstakingly produced, restored and mastered by Chris Malone, working from the first-generation album master and mono and stereo elements provided by Paramount Pictures. It includes the historic RCA album with the original songs beautifully performed by Julie Andrews, Mancini’s complete underscore for the film, plus some curious extras such as the demos played by Johnny Mercer before filming that include two unreleased Mancini-Mercer songs that were not included in the film. Instrumental versions of the songs round out the program. A treat for fans of Julie Andrews, Henry Mancini and the Mancini-Mercer songs. The lavishly designed package includes a 24-page booklet with extensive liner notes by film music writer John Takis. DISC 1. The RCA Album recording 1. Overture 4:06 2. 13. Intrada announces the digital release of Frank Ilfman's latest score, A Mistake. The 2024 film, directed by Christine Jeffs and adapted from Carl Shuker’s novel, is a gripping medical drama that delves into the consequences of a critical surgical error. The story follows Elizabeth Taylor (played by Elizabeth Banks), a highly skilled surgeon who, during a routine operation, allows her younger colleague to take charge. This decision leads to a mistake with irreversible consequences, sparking an intense fallout. As Elizabeth faces mounting scrutiny from the patient’s family and the hospital’s administration, the film explores themes of accountability, ethics, and the ripple effects of human error. It examines how one moment of vulnerability can unravel professional reputations and personal lives, raising questions about blame, responsibility, and the pressure within high-stakes medical environments. The movie premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June 2024 and received attention for its nuanced storytelling and a strong performance by Elizabeth Banks. For the score, composer Frank Ilfman created a poignant, understated depth for the unfolding drama, aligning musically with the film's exploration of vulnerability, accountability, and personal resilience. It avoids grandiosity— instead emphasizing delicate, emotive themes that reflect the characters' internal struggles. Ilfman recorded the score at the famed Abbey Road Studios. The album is available digitally wherever music is available, including Amazon, Spotify, and many others. Play all clips 01. Opening (1:48) 02. Relived (3:42) 03. The Water Front (3:09) 04. 16. “[Islands in the Stream] was so special and to me it’s always been one of my best scores. Every day I’d go down to work on it, [sitting] at the Moviola with tears in my eyes .... It’s a great film.” —Jerry Goldsmith, 1982 Intrada presents a newly mastered and edited edition of the original soundtrack to the 1977 Paramount Pictures film Islands in the Stream. The score was of such personal importance to Jerry Goldsmith that he approached Intrada in 1986, just a year after it had been formed and a few months after the release of his latest score, Poltergeist II, to seek the label's interest in creating a new recording of the score in Hungary. Intrada jumped at the chance. The brilliant recording has been in the catalog continuously since it was released in the late '80s. Since licensing and cost complications precluded a release of the original tracks at the time, the new recording was a godsend to Goldsmith enthusiasts, with the exception of a few omissions that Goldsmith couldn't get right with the Hungarian orchestra. In the 2010s, things had changed and the Film Score Monthly label was able to release the original tracks, but it has since been out of print for some time. With some slight modifications using newer technology, Doug Fake and Chris Malone were able to elevate the quality of the recording for this brand new release. The score is beautiful, deeply emotional and introspective, and at times simply thrilling. From the reflection of the inner feelings of the main character and his relationship with his family to the shark attack, lengthy Marlin sequence and rescue sequence in the last act, Goldsmith provides quite the musical adventure, presented in complete form with new notes by Frank K. DeWald. The film is a drama directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, based on the novel by Ernest Hemingway. The film follows the life of Thomas Hudson (George C. Scott), a successful painter living in the Bahamas during World War II. Struggling with his past and the impact of the war on his family, Hudson navigates complex relationships with his estranged wife, his children, and a series of romantic entanglements. The narrative explores themes of love, loss and redemption against the backdrop of a changing world, ultimately reflecting on the human condition and the search for meaning amidst chaos. 17. What Lies Beneath (2000) was a first for filmmaker Robert Zemeckis: a serious, adult-minded ghost story starring Michelle Pfeiffer and, in a rare turn (and twist) as the villain, Harrison Ford. Originally developed for Steven Spielberg, the film was a Hitchcockian throwback of slow-burn suspense, with gorgeous Vermont locations supporting the A-list talent. Scoring What Lies Beneath was, as always for Zemeckis, his long-time collaborator, Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump). Silvestri conjured up a dark, moody soundscape of suspense, orchestral violence and eerie beauty for the supernatural hauntings and real-life threat that is closer than the heroine realizes—ably recalling the spirit of the classic Hitchcock–Herrmann partnership, with Silvestri’s own vernacular and modern dramatic sense. Varèse Sarabande released What Lies Beneath as a 9-track, 30-minute program at the time of the film. This long-awaited Deluxe Edition premieres the complete score in a 25-track, 60-minute program, with new liner notes by Daniel Schweiger interviewing screenwriter Clark Gregg.
