Nach Hirschfelder bei Australia, greift Luhrmann nun wieder auf Armstrong zurück:
 

Craig Armstrong has been hired to score Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming drama The Great Gatsby. The movie based on the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher and Callan McAuliff. Luhrmann adapted the novel with his writing partner Craig Pierce (Romeo + Juliet) and is also producing the project with Oscar-winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin (Moulin Rouge!), Douglas Wick (Gladiator), Lucy Fisher (Memoirs of a Geisha), Catherine Knapman & G. Mac Brown (Australia). The novel has spawned several film adaptations in the past, most notably 1974′s version directed by Jack Clayton, starring Robert Redford and featuring music by Nelson Riddle who won the Academy Award for his work on the film. Armstrong has previously scored the director’s Romeo + Juliet, as well as the Oscar-nominated musical Moulin Rouge!, for which he also provided most of the orchestral song arrangements.

Musik wird sicher hübsch, der alte Film ist in der Tat zum einpennen... das Buch aber auch... was Luhrman daran reizt? mal sehen, vielleicht wird das ja auch wieder total überdreht...

Film wie Buch sind Klassiker und großartig! Baz wird sicher wieder einen sehr anderen Ansatz wählen. Spannend! (und hoffentlich nicht in 3D!)

Ich bin sehr gespannt darauf. Auf Film und Musik.

Bzw. Film ganz besonders. Denn nach "Romeo + Juliet" und "Moulin Rouge" fand ich "Australia" zwar wunderschön, aber so im direkten Vergleich fast langweilig .

Ich mag Baz Luhrmanns Stil und Craig Armstrongs Musik. Also wage ich mal sowas wie leichte Vorfreude

Ein Drama in 3D? Öhm....... Sofern Luhrmann nicht wieder so eine irre "Bildershow" erschafft, wie "Romeo + Juliet" oder "Moulin Rouge" frage ich mich dann doch auch, warum sich das lohnen sollte.

Gut, in dem Format anschauen werd ich's mir eh nicht... So bleibe ich gespannt auf den Film an sich in simplem 2D.

Ach, das ist doch auch ein Stück weit normal. Man könnte genauso gut in Frage stellen, ob Farbe auf den Film gehört. Letztendlich ist es eben Technik, die versucht, so realistisch wie möglich zu sein.

Ich für meinen Teil halte es jetzt nicht unbedingt sinnloser und sinniger als bei beispielsweise PotC 4, von daher: sollen sie es doch ruhig mal machen, zudem 3D ja noch lange nicht am Ende der Fahnenstange angekommen ist.

When the first trailer for director Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious adaptation of the classic novel The Great Gatsby debuted online, many were jarred by the juxtaposition of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Church in the Wild” against the film’s period setting.  The decision to use that song in the trailer wasn’t a complete shock, as Luhrmann has shown a propensity for populating his period films with modern music.  He had no problem mixing Shakespeare with Radiohead in Romeo + Juliet and 1900s France with Madonna in Moulin Rouge!.  Now, though, it appears that Luhrmann isn’t just repurposing existing songs for The Great Gatsby, but is having Jay-Z himself provide an original score for the film.  Hit the jump for more details.

 

Rumors have swirled for months regarding the score and soundtrack for The Great Gatsby, with previous reports noting that Prince and Lady Gaga might be providing original songs for the film.  Yesterday, singer/songwriter/producer Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts fame took to Twitter (via The Film Stage) to confirm that he and Jay-Z are composing the film’s score:

No other details are known at this time, but I’m pretty excited to see what comes of this collaboration.  Luhrmann isn’t exactly known for his subtlety as a filmmaker, and the trailers for The Great Gatsby promise a wildly ambitious and visually arresting iteration of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s American classic.  It’s entirely possible that the whole thing may turn out to be a complete disaster, but I remain (maybe foolishly) overly optimistic.

Für einen Musiker-Wechsel spricht, dass Z und West auch als Produzenten arbeiten, also: Musik machen und nicht nur ins Mikro trällern.

Director Baz Luhrmann already tipped his hand in the trailer for his upcoming adaptation of "The Great Gatbsy." Among the songs heard was the Jay-Z-led track "No Church in the Wild," his 2011 collaboration with Kanye West. The use married an examination of the empty, ostentatious wealth of the '20s with an examination of the empty, ostentatious wealth of today.  

This week, it came to light that "The Great Gatsby" could feature original Jay-Z works. The news was spread by the Bullitts, the musical designation for producer/musician Jeymes Samuel. In a tweet posted Monday, he wrote, "Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!." 

Unknown, however, is to what extend Jay-Z's music will figure into "The Great Gatsby." Warner Bros. Pictures has already announced that regular Luhrmann contributor Craig Armstrong is composing music for the film. Pop & Hiss reached out to the studio for further details, but as of yet the studio and Jay-Z have yet to provide more information. 

Jay-Z is already linked to another film, the Willow Smith-starring remake of "Annie." The latter has been reported to start shooting in 2013, and Jay-Z is said to be overseeing the music. Willow, of course, is signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation.

Samuel, whose brother is the better-known Seal, has been hyping his debut, "They Die By Dawn and Other Short Stories," for a while now. The album was originally due in the fall of 2012, and features a narration by actress Lucy Liu. Rappers Mos Def and Jay Electronica are among the listed contributors. 

"The Great Gatbsy," the adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, is slated for release May 10. The book and film follow Gatsby's rise into New York wealth and presents a warped, corrupt view of the American dream. Considering that much of Jay-Z's recent works have been obsessed with nothing but the spoils of fame, cash and New York, the rapper would be the clear, if obvious, choice to contemporize the story.

Bin ich eigentlich der einzige, der nach dem Film den Score kaufen wollte und ihn weder bei iTunes noch bei Saturn bekam?

Laut der Dame von Saturn gibt es deutschlandweit nur eine Compilation der Songs, die genutzt wurden. Sicherlich war die Musik nicht schlecht, ich bin allerdings ein Fan der reinen Filmmusik und was Craig Armstrong da gezaubert war echt super.

Bei ROMEO+JULIA und MOULIN ROUGE sind die Score-Alben bzw. CDs mit Score und Filmfassung der Songs ein paar Monate nach der Song-CD erschienen. Vielleicht wird es (wenn der Film ein Hit wird) diesmal auch so sein.

Der Film ist anscheinend bislang Luhrmanns erfolgreichster Streifen - zumindest ist er sehr gut gestartet. Da würde sich wenigstens ein CD-R-Album bei Amazon.com anbieten. Wäre echt schade, wenn es bei dem Album mit den Songs bleiben sollte...

Auf CD-R fahre ich nicht besonders ab. Habe bis jetzt nur eine bei mir herumliegen und dabei bleibt es! Die Qualität ist wirklich schwach!

 

Vielleicht folgt noch eine CD, wer weiß?

Inzwischen habe ich vier oder fünf CD-Rs. Solange es ansonsten nur Downloads gibt, ist das für mich die beste Alternative. Eine reguläre CD würde ich natürlich jederzeit vorziehen, aber was soll man machen? Bootlegs kaufen? Auf keinen Fall.

Ich war drin. Gut gemachter Streifen, ein Kaleidoskop der Special-Effects und auch gute Wumba-Wumba-Mucke. Nachvollziehbar, dass die erst einmal für die so genannte Breite Masse in allen Formen und Farben vermarktet wird.

Dennoch nicht das, was ich will. Egoistisch?

Ich war auch schon vor ein paar Wochen drin. Vor allem visuell weiß der Film zu gefallen. Über die Handlung und Erzählweise kann man streiten, vor allem ist es ein visueller Film (meine Meinung).

 

Armstrong hat ein sehr originelles Musikkonzept gewählt, indem er sehr wenig Musik aus der damaligen Zeit (20er-30er) verwendet, sondern die entsprechende Musiklandschaft in unseren heutige Hörgewohnheiten übersetzt.

Weiterhin sind wieder sehr viele schöne Arrangements von verschiedenem Material (Amy Winehouse, George Gershwin) zu hören, insgesamt eine sehr interessante Musik, keine Ahnung, wie sie auf CD gefällt.

Kleine Frage aus persönlicher Neugier: Ist diese... dings..... HipHop "Musik" arg störend, bzw. zu auffällig?

 

Denn diese ist für mich ein Grund, dass ich nicht direkt begeistert ins Kino renne um einen neuen Luhrmann zu bewundern
