Varèse Sarabande hat die ersten Titel der neuen Encore Series angekündigt:

We could think of no better way to begin our Varèse Encore series than by celebrating the music of the great Miklós Rózsa. Dr. Rózsa was one of the very first composers to begin recording for Varèse Sarabande, back in 1981. Rózsa traveled to Nuremberg, Germany to record this album of his score for director Richard Marquand’s Eye of the Needle. Marquand’s very next film was Return of the Jedi in 1983.

Rózsa was the perfect choice for this spy thriller and delivered a genre classic.

In Eye of the Needle, Donald Sutherland stars as a villainous Nazi spy whose passions betray him via a married woman (Kate Nelligan) in this intriguing blend of romance and espionage against the backdrop of WWII Britain.

This is, admittedly, a pretty obscure film. But Elmer Bernstein's score is an absolute classic. Much of the writing is in the mode of Bernstein's masterpiece, To Kill A Mockingbird. And Elmer isn't the only Mockingbird name on this picture. Gregory Peck is here, as the President! Our original release of this stunning score was only in print for about a year. Released in 1987, it was gone by '88. Now, 25 years after its first release, Amazing Grace and Chuck is finally available again!

Chuck Murdock (Joshua Zuehlke) is an all-American kid living in a sleepy town in Montana. He is the top pitcher of the little league team as well. After taking a tour of a nuclear silo, Chuck decides to quit playing little league until nuclear weapons are disarmed. Boston Celtic Amazing Grace Smith (Alex English) hears about Chuck's exploits, and decides to do the same thing. Amazing then moves to the young boy's town to live. More athletes follow suit as well. The town begins to hate Chuck and his family, and this makes Chuck's father angry. But can one kid's message make the world listen?

Alan Silvestri’s all-electronic score for The Clan of The Cave Bear comes from early in his career, when he was just becoming a major name in film music. The Clan of The Cave Bear followed the composer’s classic Back To The Future (1985) by just one year. Though Cave Bear is a synthesizer score, it is still loaded with melody, creative writing and beauty.

The film gave Silvestri a huge canvas. Based on the first of Jean Auel's four bestselling prehistoric novels set 35,000,000 years ago, this epic film tells the story of one woman's struggle for acceptance amidst a barbaric clan. Daryl Hannah (Grumpy Old Men, Legal Eagles) is the Cro-Magnon who seeks shelter among a tribe of Neanderthals. Extraordinary location photography and a script by John Sayles (Passion Fish, Eight Men Out) make this a truly stunning motion picture. Co-starring Pamela Reed (Junior, Kindergarten Cop) and Curtis Armstrong (Risky Business, Revenge of the Nerds).

The score has been out of our catalog for over 20 years which means that, like with each of our other Varèse Encore releases, it really is, for all intents and purposes, a brand new release.

An den Encore-Titeln hatte anscheinend Varèse seit Ewigkeiten die Rechte, an Chinatown nicht. Die CD war damals auch schon ein Re-Issue, die anderen alles original Varèse-Alben.

Um mal kurz zu mosern: Ich drücke vehement den nicht-existentin Dislike-Button bei den Encore-Preisen, die zwar (chez Colosseum) unter VCL-Niveau liegen, aber auch nur knapp. Warum war ich davon ausgegangen, dass Varese die Encore-Titel unlimitiert und zum Zweite-Runde-Kampfpreis verkauft? Eine prä-senile Bewusstseinstrübung?

Naja für mich lohnt sich die Encore-Reihe auf jedenfall bisher, außer meinem Geldbeutel. In alle drei reingehört und mir gefallen alle drei.

Mir ging es so ähnlich wie Souchak. Alles ich das heute bei Varèse als Schlusslicht auftauchen gesehen habe, gab es doch ziemliches Kammerflimmern. Aber: "nur" das alte Album. Zum einen schade: Chance vertan. Zum anderen: gut. Das Album ist, so wie ist, einfach toll und jeder, der es in den letzten Jahren verpasst hat, kann nun zugreifen. Ob es noch ein anderes Label wagt: wer weiß?

Eine schöne Idee. Achtung, ich blicke in die Zukunft... zu Weihnachten erscheint eine grandiose Neueinspielung des kompletten Scores, da die Original-Bänder leider zerstört-verloren sind. Und Latrada veröffentlicht 2014 eine Doppel-CD mit den Original-Aufnahmen zum 40. Jahrestag der CHINATOWN-Premiere. Und alle sind glücklich. Naja, einige. Ein paar. Irgendwer halt.

Das weiß ich nicht, aber bei dem derzeitigen Dollarkurs dürfte sich das doch wirklich nicht mehr rechnen, oder?
