Perseverance Records is releasing “Los Angeles, 1937,” the unused score by Phillip Lambro from Roman Polanski´s movie “Chinatown” (1974), starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway. For reasons explained in the extensive liner notes by film music writer Gergely Hubai, the soundtrack was ultimately rejected by Paramount. Now, this score is available for the first time – and on Perseverance Records exclusively.

Robin Esterhammer, owner of Perseverance Records, says: “Releasing the unused `Chinatown´ score has been our dream project ever since we did our first CDs with composer Phillip Lambro. You probably know Jerry Goldsmith´s replacement score, and now you have the chance to decide which one was a better fit for the movie.”

With 14 original tracks and four bonus tracks, the CD´s total running time is about 45 minutes. The bonus tracks are from “Structures for String Orchestra” and “Music for Wind, Brass and Percussion,” the two concert pieces that were instrumental in Phillip´s hiring for the project. The CD is limited to just 1000 units.

Robin adds: “This is a legitimate release, actually made possible thanks to a deal Phillip made with Paramount in 1974: the studio’s marketing department needed music to score the film’s trailer, but Goldsmith’s score wasn’t “exploitable enough,” according to one executive. Phillip allowed the use of his music in the trailer if he could retain the mastering and publishing rights in exchange. Paramount accepted the offer under the condition that should the music be released, it must bear an alternate title without mentioning `Chinatown´.”

Habe nur das hier gefunden.. vielleicht ist das ja auch der wirkliche Grund:

In his book "Which Lie Did I Tell?: More Adventures in the Screen Trade," William Goldman quotes Robert Towne regarding CHINATOWN:

"The first sneak? It did not go well. We had a horrendous score on the picture. By some guy that Roman knew. It was dissonant, weird, scratchy. Roman was momentarily enamored of it. He said the score was perfect. He was going off to direct an operetta at Spoletto, when mercifully, he ran into a grand old gentleman named Bronislau Kaper, who won an Oscar for his score of LILI, and he said, 'Roman, that score is killing your picture.' Roman had great respect for him and he said, 'Okay, we better get the score changed.' Jerry Goldsmith came in then, and did that great score. I was on the set when Jerry spotted it, and it was at that time when you could see the movie come to life. It was like you couldn't see the movie with the other score, and now you could, and I thought, 'Omigod, we may have a chance..."

Goldman, der alte Lügenbold... Im Buch ist tatsächlich etwas unklar, ob das ein Zitat von Towne ist oder eine Erinnung von Goldman, schriftlich, mündlich oder nur nach Gedächtnis. Macht zwar absolut Sinn, aber falls CHINATOWN schlimm gefloppt wäre, hätte man sich auch sowas vorstellen können

Originally, the movie had a very good, inventive score by Philip Lambro, but some Hollywood old-timer talked Roman into using Jerry Goldsmith's music instead, a rather rushed, by-the-numbers thing. I think that score really helped sinking the picture.

Dito. Wird ein Blindkauf für unter €16,-. Abwarten. Den Clip habe ich mir gar nicht angehört. Ist mehr "historisches" Interesse.

das klingt ja grauenhaft... puh... den Cue hab ich nicht bis zum Schluss geschafft, fairerweise muss man aber sagen, dass die CD sicher aus film(musik)historischer Sicht sehr löblich und interessant ist. Nach 1min anhören wundert mich das aber nicht, dass das rejected wurde... puh...

Dass ich den bestelle, ist natürlich klar. Wie immer werde ich auch hier keine Hörproben anhören. Ich glaube, das letzte Mal als ich sowas gemacht hab, war bei der Elmer-Bernstein-Box von Varèse...

Das Sample klingt für mich als ob da mehrere Stücke gleichzeitig laufen. Interessant: ja. Gut: Nein.

Hatte ja irgendwie auf ein Komplettpaket mit Jerry's komplettem Score und dem Rejected von Lambro gehofft!

Reden wir über den Main Title Clip? Der klingt doch richtig klasse. Erinnert mich irgendwie an Ives Central Park in the Dark.
