Da er kaum Dialog hat (mit wem auch?), dürfte es für die Musik allerlei Entfaltungsmöglichkeiten geben. Es mag sich nicht um den größten Score aller Zeiten handeln, aber ich muss auch sagen, angesichts des vorherrschenden Einheitsbreis ist es ein frischer, melodisch einfallsreicher Sound mit einigen innovativen Instrumentierungskniffen, dem ich den Gewinn absolut gönne.

Also wurde doch kräftig getauscht für die Acadamy's. Gravity müsste jetzt aber eigentlich das Rennen machen, der Rest ist reines Füllmaterial.

Thomas Newman hat gestern seinen 3. Grammy gewonnen:

Thomas Newman has won the Grammy Award for his music for the latest James Bond film Skyfall in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. The other nominated composers in the category included Alexandre Desplat (Argo,Zero Dark Thirty), Craig Armstrong (The Great Gatsby), Mychael Danna (Life of Pi) and John Williams (Lincoln). Newman has previously received six Grammys for such projects as American Beauty, Wall-E and Six Feet Under. In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Paul Epworth and Adele Adkins won the award for the Skyfalltitle song. Alone Yet Not Alone, the theme song from a little-seen film with the same title, was the headscratcher of nominations morning two weeks ago. Few had heard of it before it secured a coveted place among the top five movie songs of the year.

Now it’s out of the race completely as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rules that its composer, a former governor of the music branch and current member of its executive committee, took advantage of his leadership position to improperly lobby fellow members of the branch.

Anscheinend soll Bruce seine Mitgliedschaft in der Academy genutzt haben, um mehr Werbung für den Song zu machen.. was aber Bruce und auch Belinda Broughton gerade vehement bestreiten.. auf ABC wurde wohl sogar schon eine Gegenstory (laut Belinda die Wahrheit) erzählt... leider hab ich hier keine Möglichkeit, mir das anzuschauen..

 

Aber erstmal hier die volle Geschichte dazu:

 

In a move with few precedents in the 86-year history of the Academy Awards, the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to disqualify an Oscar nominee prior to the Oscars ceremony itself. "Alone Yet Not Alone," a little-heard tune from a little-seen film of the same name, will not appear on Oscar ballots when the final round of voting begins on Feb. 14. And the Academy will not announce a replacement nominee.

The Academy's board of governors met on Tuesday evening to investigate allegations that have been levied against the surprising nominee since Oscar nominations were announced on Jan. 16. The board eventually concluded that the song's nominated writer, Bruce Broughton, a former governor and current music branch executive committee member, "had emailed [some of the other 239] members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period," the Academy said in a statement Wednesday.

Broughton, who was nominated for the best original score Oscar for Silverado 28 years ago and served on the Academy's board from 2003-12, shared his nomination with the lyricist Dennis Spiegel. Their hymnal song is featured in an independently produced faith-based feature about 18th century colonists struggling to survive in the Ohio Valley. It was performed in the film by Joni Eareckson Tada, a prominent, quadriplegic Evangelical minister.

Moments after the announcement was made, Broughton said in a statement to THR: "I'm devastated. I indulged in the simplest grassroots campaign and it went against me when the song started getting attention. I got taken down by competition that had months of promotion and advertising behind them. I simply asked people to find the song and consider it."

"No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, the Academy president.

According to the Academy statement, "The board determined that Broughton’s actions were inconsistent with the Academy's promotional regulations, which provide, among other terms, that 'it is the Academy's goal to ensure that the awards competition is conducted in a fair and ethical manner. If any campaign activity is determined by the board of governors to work in opposition to that goal, whether or not anticipated by these regulations, the board of governors may take any corrective actions or assess any penalties that in its discretion it deems necessary to protect the reputation and integrity of the awards process.'"

There have been only a handful of instances similar to this one throughout the history of the Oscars. The short subject (comedy) nomination for Stout Hearts and Willing Hands (1931) was revoked and replaced with one for another RKO Radio short, Scratch-As-Catch-Can, without any documentation as to why. Dive Bomb (1942), a nominee for best effects (special effects), was replaced by The Sea Wolf on the Oscar ballot; history has recorded no explanation for this substitution. A best writing (motion picture story) nomination for Hondo (1953) was revoked after it was determined that it was not an original work; a replacement nominee was not announced. The nominees for a Bowery Boys comedy that was mistaken for a musical that shared its title, High Society (1956), was removed from the Oscar ballot at the request of the former film's nominees, who acknowledged that their nomination was clearly the result of voter confusion. The best original dramatic score nomination for The Godfather (1972) was revoked by the Academy prior to the Oscars when it was determined that it featured portions of Nino Rota's earlier composition for another film, Fortunella (1958); it was replaced on the ballot by the score for Sleuth. A Place in the World (1992), Uruguay's entry for the best foreign language film Oscar, was nominated by the Academy but subsequently deemed ineligible and taken off of the ballot because Uruguay was found to have had less to do with its creation than Argentina. And Tuba Atlantic, after being nominated for and losing the best live-action short Oscar, was subsequently disqualified after it was revealed that it had aired on Norwegian television prior to the Oscar ceremony.

The only film or individual to be disqualified after winning an Oscar, as far as THR has been able to determine, was Young Americans (1967), which won the best documentary feature Oscar but less than a month later was stripped of its win when it was revealed that the film had screened the prior year. The first runner-up, Journey Into Self, was awarded the win the next day.

The remaining four nominees for the best original song Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards are "Happy" from Despicable Me 2, "Let It Go" from Frozen, "The Moon Song" from Her and "Ordinary Love" from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

Multiple people associated with some of the other 70 songs that made this year's best original song Oscar shortlist but were not nominated on Jan. 16 have expressed great frustration to THR about the Academy's decision not to elevate another song to the status of a nominee, citing the aforementioned instances in which replacements were named and noting that ballots have not yet been printed and mailed to voters, most of whom now vote online anyway.

IN PRAISE OF BRUCE BROUGHTON: Today composer Bruce Broughton got thrown under the bus by the Motion Picture Academy for promoting his song in a manner that so closely resembles the manner other songs are promoted for Oscars. Because of his position as a former Academy Governor and head of the music branch and the utter obscurity of the film from which the song originated, a spotlight was shined on the role promotions play in garnering votes. He wasn't the only one doing it, he's just the one who got caught. The inner-politics of the Academy is not really that important to me. But the reputation and legacy of a good man is. Bruce Broughton is one of the finest composers to ever work in film and television. But beyond his talent, he is a truly fine and decent man. He has GREAT integrity. He is a tireless worker on the behalf of other composers and musicians. He is a straight shooter and an impeachable honest man. Born is Los Angeles, he has been one of the greatest contributors to our local music community for decades. It breaks my heart that such a decent man should have to suffer even a moment of question of his character. Bruce Broughton doesn't deserve this horrible treatment.

Ich selber kann über diese Entscheidung nur den Kopf schütteln.. das Bruce die Regeln der Academy verletzt haben soll, kann ich mir einfach nicht vorstellen.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An Oscar nomination for the song "Alone Yet Not Alone" has been rescinded, and the shocked songwriter tells Eyewitness News exclusively he's ready to fight.
"Alone Yet Not Alone" is sung by Joni Eareckson Tada, a quadriplegic with 50 percent lung capacity.
It's from a movie that made just $134,000 at the box office, which is what made its recent Oscar nomination for best song so unexpected.

On Tuesday night, the Academy's Board of Governors voted to rescind the nomination. Veteran composer Bruce Broughton wrote the song.
"Right now, I'm frustrated. I'm a little confused. Initially, I was devastated," said Broughton.
Broughton served as an academy governor for 18 years and sent an email asking former colleagues to consider voting for his song.
"I didn't ask anybody to vote for it. I didn't do any campaigning for the film. I didn't do anything that I didn't read in the rules, frankly," said Broughton.
Broughton saw competing songs, like "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2," and others promoted in big money "for your consideration" ad campaigns.
"It's more likely that people would overlook my song since it had no promotion, no marketing, it had no word of mouth," said Broughton.

In a statement, Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs said, "No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage."
Broughton sent an email to the Academy's president saying "he doesn't think he's done anything wrong."
"Well, if I learned how to game the system, I probably would have had a nomination before this. The last nomination I had was 30 years ago," said Broughton.
He is getting support on Facebook from other academy members, including Hans Zimmer, who calls the ruling "unfair."
Broughton isn't sure of his next step, but he is considering legal action.
"I feel sullied, literally, and dirtied. I feel defamed," said Broughton.

Ihm wird also unterstellt, er habe andere Mitglieder der Academy beeinflusst, sie sollten seinen Song nominieren?

 

Er ist seit vielen Jahren selbst ein Mitglied und kein Newcomer, der aus Versehen so einen "Mist baut". Also denke, er ist sehr  mit den Regeln vertraut..

 

Ich verstehe das so, dass er nichts anderes machte, ein paar Leuten Bescheid zu sagen, dass das sein Song ist und bat sie, wenn sie mögen, sich diesen Song doch mal genau anzuhören. Also selbst ein wenig Werbung dafür zu machen, da weder Film noch Lied keine große Werbung bekamen?

Hier schreib Richard Kraft einige schlaue Dinge..

 

Today’s Oscar nomination disqualification of Bruce Broughton's song from ALONE BUT NOT ALONE isn’t the first time music from a film got disqualified AFTER it was nominated.

In 1972 Nino Rota’s film music masterpiece THE GODFATHER was nominated, then disqualified when it was discovered one of its themes was similar to his score to the 1958 Italian film FORTUNELLA.

 

The punch line to this whole story… Rota ended up WINNING the Oscar a few years later for his score to... THE GODFATHER 2 that used the exact same theme as well as many of the themes he had used in the first GODFATHER film.

And to make this weird story stranger, with the favorite, THE GODFATHER out of the running, in 1972 the winner for Best Score was CHARLIE CHAPLIN for his 1952 film LIMELIGHT!

Twenty years after the film’s first release, Chaplin and his musical collaborators Raymond Rasch and Larry Russell were awarded an Oscar for Best Original Dramatic Score. It was eligible because LIMELIGHT did not have a theatrical release in Los Angeles until 1972. While touring Britain in 1952 to promote the film, Chaplin learned that he had been refused a re-entry visa to the United States because of his alleged communist sympathies, and many American theaters refused to play the film at that time (including those in LA).

Even though it was a "new" film and score in 1972, LIMELIGHT's music was quite famous by then. It's theme (written by Charles Chaplin) had already became a popular, often-covered song "Eternally."

Final piece of trivia... John Addison's score to SLEUTH replaced THE GODFATHER as the 5th Best Score nominee one Rota's score was disqualified.

Mir tut's leid für Bruce, der ein alter Profi ist und es nicht verdient hat, Opfer einer neiderfüllten Posse zu sein.

Doch es wäre nicht Hollywald, würden sie ihm nicht nächstes oder übernächstes Jahr stattdessen einen Lifetime Achievement Award aufdrängen!

Zum Song selbst: naja. Ganz nett. Mehr aber auch nicht. Da wünsch ich mir für Mr Broughton doch lieber einen "richtigen" Oscar für besten Score..!

Wie bekam der Song eigentlich seine Nominierung? Fürchterlicher evangelikaler Kitsch, da trieft die Christenpropaganda aus jeder Note.

Ganz ehrlich, darum tut's mir jetzt nicht unbedingt leid.

Es geht ja weniger um den Song als eher um die ganzen Umstände.. und das ist schon unter aller Sau.. Ein Harvey Weinstein darf die anderen Academy Mitglieder mit E-mails anschreiben, die wirklich nur so nach Werbung schreien.. während Bruce nun wegen sowas, was eher eine Bitte als eine Werbung war..  disqualifziert wurde und das ist, um es mit Hans Zimmer zu sagen "unfair".

Diese ganze Oscarverleihung stinkt bis zum Himmel. die machen ihre eigene Regeln und entscheiden dann, bei wem sie diese anwenden und bei wem nicht.. das ist es, was daran am meisten stört und durch sowas wird jemand, der schon viele Jahre Academy Mitglied ist, einfach abgewürgt..

 

Jedoch Bruce ist nicht still.. hetzt von Interview zum nächsten.. um sich zu rechtfertigen bzw die ganze Sache zu erklären..

Man weiß es eben nicht.. ist er unbequem geworden.. fehlte ihm genug Rückendeckung, die er nun aber nach der Entscheidung der Academy hat.. ne unglaublich große Rückendeckung oder vielleicht war der Academy es unheimlich, das der Song in Umfragen weit vorne lag.. man weiß es nicht.

Ich glaube wie gesagt eher an persönliche Animositäten. Vielleicht ist Broughton bei Entscheidern in Ungnade gefallen, möglicherweise wollte ihm jemand (ein missgünstiger Kollege, ein angesäuerter Ex-Mitarbeiter etc) eins auswischen. Wirklich erklärlich ist das - wie vieles bei der Academy - nicht.

Ich könnte mir durchaus auch vorstellen, dass es (auch) mit dem christlichen Background des Films zu tun hat. Da die Academy in den letzten Jahren ja betont linksliberal ausgerichtet ist, wäre evangelikale Propaganda unter den Nominierungen einfach unpassend gewesen. Ich denke, das spielt da auch mit rein.
