For those who missed the previous GDM edition released in 2002, Music Box Records is pleased to reissue the complete (slightly expanded) soundtrack of Le Marginal (The Outsider) composed, orchestrated and conducted by Ennio Morricone.

Le Marginal was a 1983 film directed by Jacques Deray (La Piscine, Borsalino, Trois hommes à abattre) and starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Henry Silva, Carlos Sotto Mayor and Pierre Vernier. The story is about Commissioner Jordan (Jean-Paul Belmondo) who arrives in Marseille to combat drug trafficking activities in his own unique way. After scuffles with local mafia godfather Mecacci’s men, as well as with his own superiors, he is transferred to Paris. Soon at loggerheads with various criminal elements, he turns to a resumption of the pursuit of drug kingpin Sauveur Mecacci (Henry Silva).

The composer, in an unusual move, used a rock theme which would resurface in Copkiller that same year of 1983, and in Frantic in 1988. This urban score features numerous variations both similar and far off, from the most melodic (a catchy theme on oboe, which is both simple and elegant) to the harshest (tensed and percussive pieces).

The soundtrack of Le Marginal has been issued numerous times. The soundtrack LP was first issued by General Music in France in 1983 with a 10-track program. In 2002, GDM released an expanded edition with a 23-track program with a rich and varied presentation far superior to the original disc. It has been sold-out for so many years.

Supervised and mastered by Claudio Fuiano, this new definitive release is an essential adjunct to the GDM release, adding two supplementary pieces: a new version of the opening titles released solely on the double CD Belmondo-Morricone (1999) and the final track, appearing on several compilations, which is a shortened montage of the first track. It also includes the three songs (two of them composed by Ennio Morricone) performed by the band Blizzard. The limited edition of 500 copies comes with an 8-page booklet with French and English commentary by Patrick Bouster.

In collaboration with EMI Music Publishing France, Music Box Records proudly presents a 2-CD edition of two complete scores which highlight the collaboration between composer Ennio Morricone and French actor Jean-Paul Belmondo: Le Professionnel (The Professional, 1981) and Le Marginal (The Outsider, 1983).

Le Professionnel is one of the Maestro’s best known scores and themes that attained fame all over the world even though very little of the composer’s music actually written for the film survived in the final cut. Instead of using the cues Morricone actually penned, director Georges Lautner and more importantly star Jean-Paul Belmondo decided to use a recording of "Chi Mai" a very famous Morricone composition that has been used and recorded in a number of different projects. The first appearance of this famous melody was in Jerzy Kawalerowicz's Maddalena (1971). As per usual, Morricone recorded longer, album only variations of his two primary motives: "Le vent, le cri" and his so called "Bach" motive whose album version was named "Le retour". The variations made for the film were featured on CDs as well, but due to the random nature of the naming and the random placement of the cues in the film, there’s a whole lot of music you never get to hear within the movie.

In dem Fall eignet sich besser "war" als "wieder", denn es handelt sich hier doch nur um Neuauflagen der von Music Box bereits an 2014 veröffentlichten Editionen der beiden Scores. Der einzige Unterschied dürfte sein, daß der bereits auf der Original-LP an 1981 vorhandene Track "Fée Morgane" bei LE PROFESSIONNEL nun nochmals mit im Rennen ist. Hat man an 2014 wohl deshalb weggelassen, weil er ursprünglich schon 1972 für  I BAMBINI CHIEDONO PERCHÉ und daher sowieso nicht für den PROFI komponiert worden war.
Der eigentliche Anlaß für diese jetzige Doppel-CD ist natürlich der Tod von Jean-Paul Belmondo vor einigen Wochen.

Im Prinzip war das damals reines Füllselmaterial, um die Platte wenigstens auf über 30 Minuten zu bringen. Eigentlich sind es ja zwei Tracks - "Fata Morgana 1" mit einer Minute und "Fata Morgana 2" mit rund vier Minuten. Das lag damals wohl bei General Music im Archiv herum und irgendjemand kam auf die Idee, die PROFI-Platte damit noch zu schmücken.
Diese beiden "Fata Morgana"-Tracks haben sowieso eine ziemlich kuriose und komplizierte Veröffentlichungsgeschichte hinter sich. So tauchte "Fata Morgana 2" 1972 zuerst als Track "Riflessiva" auf der Bruno Nicolai Library-LP "Espressioni" auf. Siehe hier B 2:

Diese LP war eigentlich als Nummer 12 des von Morricone und Nicolai gemeinsam konzipierten Library- Projekts "Dimensoni Sonore" geplant. Merkwürdig nur, daß der Track auf dieser LP sozusagen dann unter Nicolais Namen lief.

Die komplette Musik zu I BAMBINI CI  CHIEDONO PERCHÉ erschien erst 2003 auf einer Dagored-CD. Auf dieser CD tauchen die beiden "Fata Morgana"-Stücke in Track 5 ("Arpa - Fata Morgana prima") und in Track 10 ("Arpa - Fata Morgana seconda") auf.

Zuvor gab es die Point-CD an 1994, auf der BAMBINI mit CUORE DI MAMMA gekoppelt war. Auf dieser CD ist jedoch nur das kurze "Fata Morgana 1"-Stück enthalten und zwar versteckt im Track 20 "Perché (IX variazione)":
