The tumultuous early history of the Central Intelligence Agency is viewed through the prism of one mans life in The Good Shepherd, an espionage drama starring Academy Award winners Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie and Robert De Niro and directed by Robert De Niro.

Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) understands the value of secrecy discretion and commitment to honor have been embedded in him since childhood. As an eager, optimistic student at Yale, he is recruited to join the secret society Skull and Bones, a brotherhood and breeding ground for future world leaders. Wilsons acute mind, spotless reputation and sincere belief in American values render him a prime candidate for a career in intelligence, and he is soon recruited to work for the OSS (the precursor to the CIA) during WWII.

As one of the covert founders of the CIA, working in the heart of an organization where duplicity is required and nothing is taken at face value, Edwards idealism is steadily eroded by a growing suspicious nature, reflective of a world settling into the long paranoia of the Cold War. As his methods are adopted as standard operating procedure, Wilson develops into one of the Agencys veteran operatives, all the while combating his KGB counterpart. However, his steely dedication to his country comes at an ever-increasing price. Not even his wife Clover (Angelina Jolie) or his beloved son can divert Wilson from a path that will force him to sacrifice everything in pursuit of his job.

The gripping and dramatic score for The Good Shepherd was composed by newcomers Marcelo Zarvos (Hollywoodland) and Bruce Fowler.

Universal Pictures The Good Shepherd opens nationwide on December 22.

In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) is a family man struggling to make ends meet. Despite his valiant attempts to help keep the family afloat, the mother (Thandie Newton) of his five-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) is buckling under the constant strain of financial pressure. No longer able to cope, she reluctantly decides to leave.

Chris, now a single father, continues to doggedly pursue a better-paying job using every sales skill he knows. He lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, and although there is no salary, he accepts, hopeful he will end the program with a job and a promising future. Without a financial cushion, Chris and his son are soon evicted from their apartment and forced to sleep in shelters, bus stations, bathrooms or wherever they can find refuge for the night.

Despite his troubles, Chris continues to honor his commitment as a loving and caring father, using the affection and trust his son has placed in him as an impetus to overcome the obstacles he faces.

The touching and poignant score was composed by Italian film composer Andrea Guerra (Hotel Rwanda).

Columbia Pictures opens The Pursuit of Happyness nationwide on December 15.

Tully (Tobey Maguire), a soldier in the American army motor pool assigned to drive Jake around Berlin, has black market connections that may be Lenas way out or lead them all into even darker territory.

Based on the novel by Joseph Kanon.

An homage to the Golden Age of film noir thrillers, The Good German is a glistening reflection on a bygone era of film. The absolutely brilliant score by Thomas Newman is likewise cut from the cloth of such Golden Age masters as Max Steiner, Miklós Rózsa and his own father, the legendary Alfred Newman. The Good German is one of the best scores of the year and a strong Oscar contender.

The Warner Bros. film opens nationwide on December 22.

Jan, hast du schon den TRAILER zu The Good German gesehen? Ich glaube, das könnte wieder etwas (u.a. für dich) Ansprechenderes von Newman werden.

Bin auf den Film auch schon sehr gespannt, aber der Trailer sagt IMHO nicht wirklich viel darüber aus, wie die Musik später mal klingen wird.

Nein, nicht wirklich. Aber als Newman-Kenner kann man anhand des Dramen-Sujet schon eine kleine Ahnung entwickeln, in welche Richtung sich der Score bewegen könnte.

Das ist aber schon mehr als eine alte Information. Newman hat Holmes schon vor knapp einem 3/4 Jahr ersetzt.

Holmes hat, so weit ich weiß den Score in der Zeit zwischen Januar und April aufgenommen. Newman wurde schon sehr früh als Ersatz für ihn engagiert, so dass es also keine Auswechselung in letzter Minute war.

Ich bin wirklich etwas sprachlos, so etwas tolles habe ich von Newman noch nie gehört.

Dom, da kann ich dir nur verdattert zustimmen. Selbst für einen langjährigen und SEHR interessierten Beobachter von Newmans Werdegang klingen die kurzen Schnippselchen recht neuartig und ungewohnt (beinahe wie eine Hommage an das Golden Age... und seinen Vater).

Ich sage einfach mal, das wird ein Hammer-Score!! *lach*

Dominik du hast Recht,sowas habe ich als Thomas Newman Liebhaber bisher von ihm noch nicht gehört,absolut genial!!! Klingt wirklich absolut neuartig,aber trotzdem ist seine Handschrift in den Streichern unverkennbar,ein klasse Komponist.

Auch das "love Theme" in den Flöten is deutlich Newman.
