Music Composed and Conducted by Alex North What a gem of a score this is! And another score most people probably dont know. Most all of this one is in the film but the film itself is quite the rarity!

Hard Contract is the only outing as feature director that television writer S. Lee Pogostin ever made. Pogostin, whose television credits as writer include Campbell Playhouse (1953), Studio One (1954), The Dick Powell Show (1962) and Bob Hope Presents The Chrysler Theater (1965), also wrote his own screenplay here. James Coburn plays John Cunningham, a top hit man who is enlisted for the big one one last contract a hard contract, which must be carried out within a month. Cunninghams boss or handler is Ramsey Williams, played by the always-wonderful Burgess Meredith. He lays out the instructions that will send Cunningham to Spain and Brussels for two of three scheduled hits. The third will be revealed after the second is completed. Lee Remick plays the captivating American socialite Sheila Metcalf, whom Cunningham meets in Spain, and Lilli Palmer is her eccentric friend, Adrienne.

Unusual in its telling, but not unsuccessful, the film is provocative and indeed quite alluring. It draws us into this exotic world of intrigue and romance due, in no small part, to Jack Hildyards cinematography and Alex Norths utterly hypnotic score. Utterly brilliant! Utterly North!

The album features all surviving stereo mixes of the score along with the virtually complete score in mono, to help fill in the important missing cues from the stereo tapes.

Another Oscar-winner, this time for Best Song, David Shires Norma Rae makes its premiere on this day. The score itself is probably not even all that familiar to most people (or anyone, for that matter) since so little of it was actually used in the film. So this release is a significant discovery, and a worthy and important one at that!

Shires score is beautiful and noble. It is poignant and touching. As Shire is so often it is masterful.

In an Oscar-winning performance, Sally Field is unforgettable as Norma Rae, the Southern millworker who revolutionizes a small town and discovers a power in herself she never knew she had. Under the guidance of a New York unionizer (Ron Leibman) and with increasing courage and determination, Norma Rae organizes her fellow factory workers to fight for better conditions and wages. Based on a true story, Norma Rae is the mesmerizing tale of a modern day heroine. Beau Bridges co-stars.

THE RIGHT STUFF - Bill Conti (wird einige freuen)

One of the most requested soundtracks of the 1980s, Bill Contis classic, Academy Award-winning score receives its world premiere release!

Winner of four Academy Awards, The Right Stuff chronicles the story of the pioneering Mercury astronauts: men named Shepard, Grissom, Glenn, Carpenter, Schirra, Cooper and Slayton, the first Americans to ride a primitive spacecraft solo into a new frontier. Preceding them in the history books was the legendary Chuck Yeager who, far removed from the awesome media spotlight that would focus on the spacemen a decade later, became the first man to break the sound barrier piloting the fabled X-1. Sam Shephard (as Yeager), Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, Barbara Hershey, Fred Ward and others, in a marvelous ensemble cast, make this sweeping saga funny, touching and bracingly human.

Back in the 80s we released a concert suite of The Right Stuff, paired with a concert suite of North and South, featuring Mr. Conti conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. The actual soundtrack that won Conti an Oscar, however, has mind bogglingly, never been released!

LONELY ARE THE BRAVE - Jerry Goldsmith

Without question one of the most historic releases of our CD Club to date! Lonely Are The Brave finally!! Jerry Goldsmiths first major motion picture and he was hired on the recommendation of the legendary Alfred Newman, no less!

Famous for featuring Kirk Douglass favorite own performance (the actor inscribed in his personal copy of the script of all the movies I have made, this is my favorite), Lonely Are The Brave is a poignant and symbolic modern western. Based on Edward Abbeys novel The Brave Cowboy, which was adapted for the screen by Dalton Trumbo, the film tells the sad story of a lone cowboy named Jack Burns (Douglas). Increasingly out of place in the world he lives in, Burns struggles to overcome lost love and cling to times past.

Some roads are long indeed. But this one has led to a resolution that now seems so perfectly choreographed and timed. Joining the celebration of what would have been Goldsmiths 80th birthday, and coinciding with the exciting premiere release of the film on DVD, comes this premiere release of the films historic score. That chapters as important as this one are still being added to Jerry Goldsmiths recorded legacy is nothing short of miraculous.

Even on a project as early as this one, we see that Goldsmith was already composing scores that could be described as among the best he ever wrote. Lonely Are The Brave most assuredly is just that. It is arguably his best western score, written for the best western he ever scored.

Nicht schleeeecht, wirklich nicht schlecht! Ich hab' mir mal den Goldsmith und den Conti vorgemerkt. North und Shire lasse ich mal vorüberziehen und werde die auch in Zukunft wahrscheinlich nicht vermissen. Ist "The right stuff" nicht das, wo Conti richtig dreist aus den "Planeten" geklaut hat? Schon die ersten warmen Streicher erinnern ja an den Jupiter. Herrlich auch, wie auf diesen hübsch warm orchestrierten Schnipsel der "March I" bei den Hörbeispielen folgt und plötzlich absolut trashige Synths erklingen.

Von "Lonely are the brave" hab' ich bereits die Delphi-CD, aber anscheinend scheint die Klangqualität der Club-CD deutlich transparenter zu sein, außerdem enthält das gute Stück etwas mehr Musik...sehr schön!

Fazit: Der CD-Club ist doch immer mal wieder für eine Überraschung gut und ich glaube, jeder profotiert davon, dass auch die unerbittlich scheinenden Studios endlich ihre Tore geöffnet haben.

Herrlich auch, wie auf diesen hübsch warm orchestrierten Schnipsel der "March I" bei den Hörbeispielen folgt und plötzlich absolut trashige Synths erklingen.

Dazu muss gesagt werden, dass diese synths weder im film noch auf den zahlreichen bootleg versionen zu hören sind, insofern muss das wohl daran liegen, dass es sich bei dem hier verwendeten cut um ein ursprünglich geplantes album release handelt bei dem diese synth-stücke als album-exclusives dabei waren. Ich hoffe, dass der marsch trotzdem als rein orchestrale version auf der cd dabei ist, hoffentlich die version die in den end credits zu hören ist.

Ich hab' mir den Conti eher spaßeshalber bestellt, weil alle meinten, dass, obwohl dreist geklaut wurde, die Musik einen hohen Unterhaltungsfaktor besäße und habe mich daher nie wirklich vorher um die Musik gekümmert. Weder ist mir der Film begegnet, noch kenne ich die CD von "North and South & The right stuff" und erst recht kenne ich keine Bootlegs von der Musik. Solche wirklich billig klingenden Synths habe ich daher nicht erwartet. Der Schock dürfte ja noch größer für die gewesen sein, die die Musik schon kennen. Ich harre mal der Dinge, die da kommen. Schließlich gibt es ja noch einen "March II". Vielleicht ist der ohne elektronische Elemente. Wie sieht der Elektronik-Anteil in der Filmversion der Musik aus?

Von "The Right Stuff" hingegen habe ich die alte Varèse CD (zusammen mit "North & South"). Die reicht mir da ehrlichgesagt.

Aber die Einspielung finde ich sehr gut, und für mich enthält sie alles Wichtige.

Bei North und Shire überlege ich noch... der Shire klingt mir ehrlich gesagt viel zu poppig, aber der Titel-Song ist schon prima. Aber nur wegen des Songs eine teure Club-CD kaufen? Ich denke, ich nehme zusätzlich zum Goldsmith erstmal nur Norths HARD CONTRACT.

Den Song aus Norma Rae gibt es auf der Gorfaine-Schwartz CD "David Shire Film music" wie auch auf der alten BC Shire at the movies (allerdings von Maureen McGovern gesungen). Letztere ist von Bruce Kimmel wiederaufgelegt worden (Kritzerland)

A tribute to Jerry Goldsmith, "The Music of Lonely are the Brave", rounds out the package. Clocking in just under 10 minutes, it features Robert Townson, one of the composer's apprentices, talking about the creation of the film's score and an explanation of the style and themes. I like the interesting parallels he points out between Lonely and First Blood, which Goldsmith also scored.

Ich weiß auch nicht. Irgendwie machen es mir die Hörproben auch nie leichter.

Z.b. beim Goldsmith Score. Die Hörporbe vom Track "Barroom Brawl" gefiel mir sehr, der Rest war so lala.

Beim Conti erste und dritte Hörprobe super, die zweite ein wenig zu extrem synthielastig

North...mhm da sprachen mich die Hörproben nicht so an.

Und der gute Shire auch eher so lala
