Music Composed by John Corigliano A major film music premier comes in this first ever release of John Corigliano’s brilliant score for Hugh Hudson’s 1985 film Revolution.

John Corigliano’s very first film score, that for the film Altered States (1980), immediately established him as a hugely important film composer and earned him an Academy Award nomination. His third score, The Red Violin (1998) earned him a second Oscar nomination and, this time, went on to win! Corigliano’s only other film score, 1985’s Revolution, has never been released at all. Sadly, the film’s initial failure at the box office doomed it to a much more obscure existence … until now.

In an elaborate edition of the album Corigliano had always wanted released, the composer has taken part in every step of production. Featuring liner notes by John Corigliano, director Hugh Hudson and film music historian Nick Redman, Varèse Sarabande's Revolution is a major event!

The American Revolution is more than the war of Washington and Jefferson, great issues and radical thought. It’s also a struggle of ordinary people, unlettered in combat, politics and government. Al Pacino stars as a rough-hewn trapper drawn into the conflict in this compelling adventure framed by the violent summer of 1776 and the bloody victory of Yorktown in 1781. Revising the theatrical release specially for a recent DVD release, director Hugh Hudson (Chariots of Fire) finally realizes his own vision for the film and depicts America’s birth in a visceral style unlike most period movies. The production design, cinematography, score and strong cast (Donald Sutherland, Nastassja Kinski and Joan Plowright) combine for an effect revolutionary and powerful.

This very special album will be released in stores later in 2010 but, as a special holiday treat for those who love great film music, it will be available early through our CD Club, but only until January 3, 2010.

A pair of lush, tropical scores to keep you warm this winter, Daniele Amfitheatrof's Bird of Paradise and Hugo Friedhofer's Lydia Bailey come to CD for the first time!

Bird Of Paradise is the second iteration of Richard Walton Tully’s popular play about a young Westerner whose romance with a Polynesian princess arouses the ire of the island gods; the first was made by RKO in 1932, directed by King Vidor and starring Dolores Del Rio and Joel McCrea. Fox's 1951 production starring Debra Paget and Jeff Chandler was not very successful. Lending power and verisimilitude to the occasionally silly — if supremely diverting — proceedings, is Daniele Amfitheatrof’s gorgeously evocative score.

Very different in kind, if not in quality, is Hugo Friedhofer’s score for Lydia Bailey, a fascinating if rarely seen historical epic focusing on former slave Toussaint Louverture’s 18th century struggle for Haiti’s independence. By the time he got to Lydia Bailey, Friedhofer was what colleague David Raksin called “a patriarchal figure,” and there is, in fact, something magisterial about his music here. This is a muscular score, somber and grave from the very first moments of its opening cue, Mirabeau, with Friedhofer brilliantly blending straightforward symphonic suspense and daring hints of African-style percussion.

A double dose of cinematic musical splendor for those OK with travelling back a little farther in time to a Golden Age when such film music releases as this couldn't even be dreamed of.

For those who listened to Robert Townson’s 80th birthday tribute to Jerry Goldsmith on Sirius/XM Radio’s Cinemagic back in February, you heard a preview from this new album. Now, here’s the whole thing! Jerry Goldsmith received his very first Oscar nomination for his score for John Huston’s 1962 film FREUD.

An utterly brilliant score, Freud gave Goldsmith the opportunity to psychologically probe the human mind. He merged his own musical style with the Vienna school of Berg, Webern and Schoenberg to produce an agitated and thoroughly captivating work. Without question one of the most important scores of Jerry Goldsmith’s career, there were even cues from this score which found their way (much to Goldsmith’s chagrin) into Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien.

Freud follows the career of the famous doctor (Montgomery Clift) as he leaves his work in Vienna to study hypnotherapy in Paris with Professor Charcot (Fernand Ledoux). After marrying (Susan Kohner) he goes to work with Dr. Joseph Breur (Larry Parks) to treat a young woman (Susannah York) and a young man (David McCallum) whose neuroses form the basis of Freud’s major theories and lead him to focus on analysis in place of hypnosis.

Now expanded from its original LP release, Freud comes to CD for the very first time!

gut möglich, aber auf der anderen seite: escape from the planet of the apes ist ja auch noch zu haben, und das seit 2 monaten. immer noch nicht ausverkauft wie ich sehe.

die audioqualität ist eine katastrophe. kein wunder, die musik ist ja uralt. ich kaufe generell solche release nicht, da mich eine miserable audioqualität stört und ich die musik nicht genießen kann. egal was für ein mega knaller es wäre ...

"Freud" ist bestellt.

Ich habe da zwar die Tsunami CD, aber die ist ja sowohl von der Klangqualität als auch von der Aufmachung her weniger überzeugend. (Und auch mit der Legalität ist das bei der Tsunami ja so eine Sache.)

Ein weiterer Pluspunkt der Deluxe Edition sind natürlich auch die bisher unveröffentlichen Tracks.

Wirklich, die Editionen zu REVOLUTION und FREUD stehen IMO auf einer Stufe mit LaLaLands SECONDS und Intradas BACK TO THE FUTURE. Ganz groß!

Solche zwei Hammer-Releases hätte ich mir dieses Jahr nicht mehr träumen lassen...

FREUD scheint ja auch gut erweitert zu sein - in jedem Fall kann nun die alte Tsunami-Scheibe endlich in die Tonne.

REVOLUTION gab´s ja noch nie auf CD, zu FREUD könnte man was aus dem alten Tsunami-Schnitt basteln. Mal sehen, vielleicht mach ich da mal was...

FREUD ist übrigens eine gute Viertelstunde länger als die alte Tsunami-CD. Dann noch besserer Klang und ein nettes Booklet dazu - perfekt!

Irgendwie gefallen mir auch die Ausschnitte aus dem Friedhofer/Amfitheatrof-Album ziemlich gut... Interessanter Percussion-Einsatz in beiden Scores. Den nehme ich wohl auch noch mit.

Zum Glück war ich Samstag auf dem Flohmarkt und habe genug verkauft, dass es für die nächsten interessanten VÖs reicht.
