Max Steiner's Adventures of Don Juan is one of the all-time great Golden Age film scores and finally bursts onto CD with every note intact for the first time from Tribute Film Classics.

Warner Bros.' lavish 1948 production follows the lovemaking and swashbuckling exploits of legendary lover Don Juan de Marana (Errol Flynn) as he fights to save the Spanish court -- and its beautiful queen -- from the evil Duke de Lorca. The typically excellent Warner cast includes Viveca Lindfors, Robert Douglas, Alan Hale and Raymond Burr.

Steiner packs the film with musical colorings that run the gamut from rousing action themes to glorious processionals to lilting love themes and serenades. The infectious Don Juan theme itself is one of Steiner's most recognizable and he brilliantly exhausts every possible variation of it to keep the score fresh and cohesive. The award-winning Tribute team of William T. Stromberg, John Morgan and Anna Bonn have meticulously recreated every note for this first-ever presentation of the complete score. As with all previous Tribute recordings, Stromberg conducts the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in a flawless performance that will astound all lovers of classic film music.

Also included in the set is the complete score for Frank Capra's popular comedy Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) starring Cary Grant. Here, Steiner cleverly uses numerous existing melodies to complement the tale of two kindly spinster sisters who just happen to have a penchant for poisoning lonely old men. A delightful 18th century children's hymn is used for the main thematic material, but Steiner also creates a wonderful, fairy-like theme for one of the crazy spinsters and provides his usual abundance of expressive motifs.

Rounding out the set are bonus tracks that include Steiner's great trailer re-orchestrations for both films, and an amazing surprise track that will thrill all fans of the great composer.

A 68-page, full-color booklet is spectacularly designed by Jim Titus and features notes from the Tribute principals along with Steiner archivist James V. D'Arc. The booklet is jam-packed with photos and includes extensive production histories of the two films by historian Ryan Brennan and cue-by-cue analyses by Curt Hardaway.

Also, ich habe mich jetzt so lange auf die VÖ gefreut, dass ich sie gleich bestellt habe. Und ich finde auch den Preis für so eine aufwändige Neueinspielung durchaus gerechtfertigt. Die Probe-Tracks klingen sehr gut -ich mag das. Ich habe mir die CD heute morgen bestellt.

Auch die alte BYU ist gut hörbar gemmessen an den 63 jahren die sie schon auf dem Buckel hat. Da Morgan Stromberg ja meistens beratend für BYU oder auch SAE tätig sind ist davon auszugehen, daß man sich bei den Tempi auch an die alte Einspielung angepasst hat. Insofern werd ich mir diese Tribute ebenfalls gönnen.

Die Tribute-CD kam heute endlich an. Mehr zur Musik in den nächsten Tagen. Aber zur Ausstattung: toll! Dicke CD-Hülle mit einem wirklich prallen Buch. "Booklet" kann man das schon nicht mehr nennen. Das Buch ist zudem sehr schön gedruckt. Dreht man es um, hat man ein neues Buch zum anderen Score. Geniale Idee!

Ich schreibe keine Kritiken. Ich gebe persönliche Eindrücke wieder.

Klanglich und interpretatorisch absolut hervorragend. Glockenklarer Klang, großes und spielfreudiges Orchester. Rumst ganz schön und macht herrlich viel Spaß. 81 Minuten gute Don Juan-Laune. Die Spitzenhäubchen habe ich noch gar nicht gehört - dazu später einmal was - weil ich immer wieder mit Juan anfange. Neben Steiners She für mich die bisher beste Tribute-CD. Ich habe mich in den letzten Tagen öfters erwischt, wie ich das Titelthema-pfeifend durch Haus geschlichen bin. Aber es ist auch wirklich ein Ohrwurm. Von meinem Standpunkt aus eine ganz große Empfehlung. Wer allerdings partout keine Neueinspielungen mag: siehe Post #6. Oder wer's billig* will #9.

Nachdem James Fitzpatrick in Sachen Tadlow schon kapituliert hat, liest sich das hier von John Morgan auch nicht gerade erfreulich.

I would like to be optimistic and I have always believed “Never Say Never,” so I can’t say for sure what the future will hold. I can say that rerecording classic scores is no longer a financially feasible proposition, if it ever was. Costs has skyrocketed and sales have diminished. When we left Marco Polo/Naxos, we had hoped by starting our own label we could improve our product with more freedom in making sure things were done to our standards despite the costs. As we can see, Bill and I are no businessmen, but we have a love for golden age film music and have a passion in seeing this music being saved and rerecorded anew for a hopefully new generation of music lovers.

Bill’s wife, Anna, who IS a business women, was also passionate about this music and has financed all our Tribute releases through THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE and THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER. That’s six very expensive releases that the three of us believed in and neither Anna, Bill or me have taken a penny for the work we did in reconstructing/restoring/copying/conducting etc. these releases. And I can tell you every score took months of preparation. And since we partnered with Screen Archives, they took care of booklet and pressing costs which is certainly not an inexpensive endeavor. The only reason our two initial Herrmann releases have probably broke even by now is because of the income generated by our subsequent releases, so we seem to always be four releases behind...in other words, it takes about six releases to pay for two.

If it wasn’t Screen Archives (Craig Spaulding and William Waybourn), our last two releases would never have seen the light of day. And these were very costly recordings and had to cost close to $200,000 when everything was said and done.

Of course, in the arena of releasing original tracks, this is truly a golden age. 10 or 15 years ago I would never have dreamed that so many high profile and sought after scores would ever be released with such frequency. But with $20 a pop, how many of us can even afford everything we would like to have with the prospect that these often limited pressings of 1,000, or 3, 000 or 5,000 units being pressed before going out of print. So there is an extra incentive to purchase these while possibly putting off buying a title that has unlimited units that can be bought anytime. On the other hand, I am somewhat shocked at how many classic scores that still remain on the shelf and haven’t even sold out with a 3,000 unit pressing.

When we were doing scores for Marco Polo/Naxos, we had some great sales, which Bill and I didn’t share in, although it allowed us to continue the series. KING KONG, and about 6 other titles hit more than 10,000 sold units, and it was rare to sell less than 5,000 copies of a score. Of course, costs were really more reasonable in the 90s up to about 2005. They could sell these for $15.00 and when they went to Naxos, you could find them for under ten bucks.

With the lousy economy, the era of downloads, the ease of making copies at home, and the shrinking audience along with the greatly increased cost of doing certain worthwhile titles, one can feel like Don Quixote fighting windmills

Klar, das sich das nicht rechnet. Schade, da wird das Zeitalter der Rerecordings wohl bald zu Ende gehen.
